Tricky Words in this week's OVI
Clothing; clothes; cloth - šatstvo; šaty in the sense of oblečenie; látka, tkanina (some cloth); handra, prachovka (a cloth). First of all, tricky pronunciation. There are no characters in the Slovak alphabet which reproduce the sounds /đ/ (this and that) and /O/ (thanks), but to imitate American pronunciation you say /kláđing/, /kláđz/ and /klaO/, while British pronunciation is like /klouđing/, /klouđz/ and /kloO/. Lazy Londoners say /klouving/, /klouvz/ and /klof/. Clothing is nobody's individual property, but we all have our own clothes. Some cloth is like metrový textil, but a cloth (a dish-cloth, a floor-cloth, a window-cloth, a duster) is usually square and may have a hem (lem, lemovanie).
