Gear - another word which changes its meaning depending on whether it is used in a countable or uncountable sense. The countable sense appears in expressions with "a
gear" or "gears", meaning "prevod" or "rýchlosť", such as "high/low/reverse gear", "change down a gear" or "How many gears does your bike have?". This meaning developed from the idea of gear as
(mechanical) equipment or tackle (kladkostroj), which is an uncountable word now, and also tools (e.g. welding gear), but it's used for sports equipment as well, as in skiing, climbing or diving
gear.
Then it comes to mean clothes, firstly specialized (soccer/hockey/cycling gear - and remember to say "jersey" or "shirt", because "a dress" is for a woman - "dámske
dlhé večerné šaty"), then ordinary clothes, then extending to personal property generally, as in "I'm coming, I'll just get my gear", meaning "my stuff", "my things", "my belongings".
