Manage. This can mean "riadiť", especially with regard to people, so strictly speaking a manager is in charge of a group of people, whereas a director is in charge of an area of activity. A police officer directs the traffic at an intersection, sending the vehicles in the right direction.

The coach or trainer of a sports team is also sometimes called the manager, because s/he coaxes the best performance out of the players. But very often in ordinary speech "manage" means "zvládnuť", "poradiť si" or "stihnúť", as in the following sentences: We only just managed to catch the train. / Pantani managed the Alpe d'Huez climb in record time. / I can manage by myself, thanks. And sometimes it's meant ironically, like "podarilo sa mi" as in: I've managed to lose my cellphone. By the way, congratulations to goalman Hudáček on managing to save those shots from Pálffy - no irony!
