Protection, prevention and fighting. I aim to translate OVI extracts into natural English (e..g. using the word volunteers for the Daffodil Day money collectors rather
than activists, due to the political connotations of that term in English), but I also try to keep close to the original Slovak text so that readers can see how I translate particular words, and
how English grammar corresponds or contrasts with the Slovak.
I've used the expression "fire protection" because it's closer in meaning to the Slovak "ochrana", but also because it covers the two ideas of "fire prevention" and
"fire-fighting", which are different ways of protecting people from fire. Preventing fires (e.g. by being careful with naked flames and flammable materials, or switching off unsupervised electrical
equipment) is better for protecting people because no fire should start, but if one does, then using the correct fire-fighting method is vital (e.g. the right extinguisher for the specific type of
fire).
