I would like to be able to explain how it happens that modern English words become used in Slovak with a different meaning compared with the original. These form a new category of Tricky Words, because they are different from the usual examples like nervózny-nervous, aktuálny-actual or ambulancia-ambulance. In these cases the modern English meaning has changed compared with the original Latin, but in the case of "kastingy" it's the Slovak idea which is different.

The verb "to cast" means to throw, and "throwing" people into parts or roles in theatrical plays, musicals or cinematic movies is called casting. Actors go to casting sessions trying to get a part from the director/producer of a movie or play. The cast is "osadenstvo" in Slovak. The Talent Night contestants want to win prizes, and to reach the final round they have to succeed in the AUDITIONS, derived from Latin "audire", to hear or listen to - which is what the jury does before judging them. So WHY are they called "kastingy"??
