"Where and how we're going to live" has its winners

Encouraging young people to take a positive attitude to the environment and the urgent need for its protection was the main aim of the first edition of the annual environmental competition which goes by the tell-tale name "Where and how we're going to live", and which was organized by U. S. Steel Kosice at the beginning of this year for elementary school pupils in Kosice and its environs.
The competition raised an extraordinary response. Last Thursday afternoon, May 6th, the Amphitheater in Kosice was the venue for the grand announcement of the competition results, attended by U. S. Steel Kosice President Christopher Navetta. The jury awarded the sum of 20 000 SKK to four schools: the Drabova Street school for their project, creating a nature trail teaching tree-recognition, including relaxation areas set up with wooden benches and tables also usable for lesson purposes; the Galakticka Street school for their esthetic improvement of the usefulness of the school grounds and humanization of the educational process; the Lechkeho Street school for their project "On the Green Trail all year round", in which the pupils and their parents together aim to recreate the school environs as a stimulating area for education and relaxation, as well as gaining some practical experience and skills in disposing of waste; and Koksov-Baksa village school for their project of complete restoration of functionality of the school yard.
Further financial awards went to the elementary schools at Park Angelinum and Gemerska Street in Kosice and in the villages of Cana, Zdana, Vysna Mysla, Skaros and Poproc. All the winning projects will be implemented in practise.

Mobile Day

The strong links between the cities of Kosice and Mobile, the best part of 6000 kilometers away in the American state of Alabama, and the good, friendly relations between their citizens, are meant to be symbolized in the Flowerbed of Friendship, the replanting of which has become a regular feature in the Kosice Days celebrations.
This partnership, which has lasted fourteen years to date, was reinforced by the people of Kosice early in the evening of last Tuesday, May 4th. Supervised by representatives of the MOKA Association and City Greenery Service and in the presence of various invited guests and a crowd of onlookers, a group of youngsters planted out almost a thousand summer flowers - red and white sturtiums and blue pansies - in the special flowerbed in the City Park near Jakab's Palace.

Kosice Spring Music Festival in partnership with U. S. Steel Kosice

Ludwig van Beethoven and his Symphony No.9 in D Minor, opus 125, featuring Schiller's "Ode to Joy", proved once again last Wednesday their combined ability to get people out of their seats - in this case the audience at the opening concert of the 49th edition of the annual Kosice Spring Music Festival.
The performance of Beethoven's Ninth was symbolic. Just four days prior to this opening concert the Slovak Republic had become a full member of the European Union, and the European Anthem, approved by the Council of Europe in 1972 and used throughout the EU, is actually based on the melody from the last movement of Beethoven's last symphony. The international music festival, which is now well into the second week of its carefully-prepared, wide-ranging program, is supported again this year by U. S. Steel Kosice.
