Scholarship Program
Support of education has been a part of responsible approach to the regional development since the beginning of U. S. Steel business in Slovakia. For a long time the company has been cooperating mainly with technical universities and secondary schools. The U. S. Steel Košice Scholarship Program has been established with an ambition to focus on systematic support of university students with excellent study results.
Since 2004 we have provided 406 scholarships incl. 25 scholarships for academic year 2020/2021 in total amount 36 900 euros.
PROJECT INTENTION
- to support talented students from children's homes, incomplete families and those living in socially disadvantaged conditions in Eastern Slovakia in studying at colleges and universities, in accordance with the donation and sponsorship criteria and activities of U. S. Steel Košice (since 2004)
- to support talented children of U. S. Steel Košice full-time employees in studying at colleges and universities (since 2007)
FOCUS GROUP
- undergraduate students at colleges and universities (daily full time course, max. 26 years old)
MEANS OF SUPPORT
- scholarship for the academic year is max. 2000 EUR payable in two equal installments, depending on whether the student studies in Slovakia or abroad
- individual scholarships may be prolonged based on new applications to cover more than one academic year, if the criteria are fulfilled and no other students fulfilling the criteria have applied
Selection criteria
Within the donation and sponsorship approval procedure, U. S. Steel Košice top management will decide on student selection based on the following criteria:
- applicant's permanent residence must be in the Košice region and he/she studies technical branch
- applicant's study results must reach average grade 1.8 or better (average grade in every academic year or the last year in secondary school)
- applicant's social conditions (the average income for each family member is lower than 1.5 times the official minimum living income)
- daughters and sons of USSK employees are not limited by income and permanet address, but the following aspects will be considered:
- students on technical courses that match the production policy of U. S. Steel Košice or
- unusual personal or family circumstances (student's disability, incomplete family, especial success in international competitions) and
- employees must have been working for USSK at least three years prior to the scholarship application deadline
- all applicants fulfilling the above criteria will be invited for a personal interview in which they must successfully demonstrate their motivation for studying; out-of-school activities such as community support are taken into account.
Termination
The scholarship will be withdrawn if the recipient fails to attend full time or is suspended by academic institution for academic or disciplinary reasons, or if she/he behaves not in compliance with the donation agreement.
