We support diabetic children's summer health camp
On Saturday, July 3rd, sixty children diagnosed as having diabetes mellitus came from all over Slovakia to the U. S. Steel Kosice recreation center at
Kosicka Bela to start the first of this summer's fortnightly health camps. The preparation and organization of these camps is the result joint efforts by American investors in Slovakia, the SR
Ministry of Employment, Social Affairs and the Family and the SR Ministry of Health.
There will be three consecutive camps providing stays for more than 180 children altogether, aged from six to eighteen years old. The grand opening of this project
is planned for July 14th, involving managers from the companies U. S. Steel Kosice and Johnson & Johnson and representatives of the Slovak Government. An entertaining program has
been prepared for the children, with discotheques of course, but also featuring autograph sessions with ice-hockey players from Slovakia's national team and with car rally drivers.
Students start summer work experience at U. S. Steel Kosice
For 45 young people, students of the third and fourth years at various universities, Thursday of last week, July 1st, saw the beginning of their two-month paid
summer work experience at U. S. Steel Kosice. This has been offered to all those who were successful in the English test in March and later in interviews with the Company's top
managers.
Compared with last year the interest among students in summer work at USSK was almost double. The highest level of interest was expressed by students at the
Technical University in Kosice, and they make up the largest group among those who gained this opportunity - 32 students altogether from various branches of study. From July 1st to August 31st
they will be working both in production plants and in management sections of the Company. The students will be spending three days each week in the workplaces themselves, working on plans and
analyses and joining in the performance of specific tasks. Each of them has their own mentor, who will be helping them towards better adaptation. Thursdays and Fridays are reserved for personal
development.
Training courses in team work have been prepared for the students. They will also take part in workshops led by Company managers during which they will investigate
case studies taken from real business practice. Their program will also include a course named Introduction to Steel Production, which will give them an overview, partly based on plant tours, of
the complete metallurgical cycle from primary production through to finishing. This summer paid work experience, according to Personnel Service and Education Manager Milan Polca, is beneficial
for both sides.
For the students, they gain practical experience of the real functioning of the firm to complement the theoretical knowledge acquired in their studies. For
U. S. Steel Kosice, it means better recognition of potential candidates for future recruiting.
Kosice Zoo celebrates its 25th anniversary
Last week, on July 1st, the Kosice Zoological Gardens, Europe's third largest in area, celebrated the 25th anniversary of their founding. Building work began in 1979, and the first seven hectares of showing space was opened to the public in 1986. Every year Kosice Zoo is visited by around 100 000 people. Many of them make their way up to Kavecany to see the Zoo's special attraction, now also featuring in the Guinness Book of Records - the bear quintuplets, which in May of this year moved into a new, atypically-styled bear compound. One of the cubs has an adoptive parent in the form of U. S. Steel Kosice.
