CO2 national allocation plan - subject of meeting in Kosice

Companies which are seriously concerned about reduction of CO2 allowances in National allocation plan met today in Kosice. They expressed concerns that Slovak industrial enterprises' competitive position may be impacted by this NAP.
Original NAP proposal, later reduced by European Commission decision by 14%, corresponded to commitment of Kjoto Protocol not to exceed in 2008 - 2012 92% of annual volume of greenhouse gases emissions in 1990. The meeting aimed to exchange of opinions and proposal of further mutual steps to achieve originally requested CO2 quotas, which would enable the companies to produce in planned volumes.
Representatives of the companies concerned appeal to government to promote more penetratively interests of Slovak economy and progressive economic development in relation to European Commission and to create competitive conditions for Slovak companies.

Opportunities for studying in the USA

In the last few days the InfoUSA Center, which is located in the State Research Library in Kosice, organized a session providing advice and information focused on studying in the USA. The co-organizer of the session was the Fulbright Commission in the Slovak Republic.
"We organize these events in Slovakia fairly often," says Commission representative Nora Hlozekova, "mainly in cooperation with the SAIA agency or universities. This program, named in honor of Senator J. William Fulbright, was approved by Congress in Washington back in 1946. Its aim is to increase mutual understanding between Americans and the citizens of other countries. Today the Commission works in more than 150 countries around the world, fifty of which have signed bilateral agreements with the US Government on educational exchanges. The Slovak Republic did so in 1994."
She adds that the Fulbright Commission provides its services to Slovak citizens and institutions and to American ones alike. In Slovakia it works through eight programs focusing for example on postgraduate study, research staff, secondary school teachers, scientists for the new century, and specialists in public administration, the private sector and non-governmental organizations. The Fulbright "senior specialists" program is also well-known, enabling Slovak institutions to ask for short-term cooperation with experienced American experts on for example curriculum and staff development or institutional planning.
