Collection for children in children's homes
On the initiative of U. S. Steel Kosice President's wife Susan Lohr, a collection of clothing, toys and books for children is being organized at USSK. The collection will be starting on Monday, October 17th, and continuing until Friday, October 21st. Donated items will be collected in two places, one of them at Public Affairs Building and the other in the city at the "Autumn of Life" senior citizens' club at the Ferrocentrum Social Center. Steelworks pensioners are already looking forward to the collection, and are willing to help in every way in its organization. Similarly many of the wives of American managers in Kosice are planning to get involved in the collection, not only by contributing items but also by joining in the organization itself.
Friday evening again devoted to long-serving employees
For the second time in two weeks, on October 7th the premises of Ferrocentrum Social Club belonged once again to the long-serving employees of U. S. Steel
Kosice. The grandly-decorated dining-room was the venue for an evening full of great entertainment for around two hundred steelworkers, together with their spouses and partners, from the Hot and
Cold Strip Mills, Surface Finishing and Dispatching divisions, who are celebrating their 30th, 35th and 40th anniversaries of starting work at the steelworks this year.
As mementoes of the years of work during which they have made their indelible marks in the annals of the Company's history, they received a letter of thanks from
Company President David H. Lohr and a silver medal. Men who have worked four decades and women thirty-five years at the steelworks received letters of thanks and gold medals during the evening
personally from the President himself - and in addition the attractive and valuable gift of a wristwatch.
Blast furnaces employees have lunch with President David Lohr
On Wednesday last week, October 5th, nine employees from the Blast Furnaces division accepted the invitation from U. S. Steel Kosice President David H.
Lohr to a joint lunch, which was also attended by Vice-president Human Resources Miroslav Kiralvarga and Vice-president Operations Scott C. Pape. The introductory words were spoken by the host,
David Lohr, who praised the long years of work by the blast furnaces workers and emphasized their share in the good results of the Company as a whole. He confided a few details from his own past
to his guests, about his work for the Corporation to date, but also about his personal interests.
Over the enjoyable lunch an informal debate on all kinds of topics flowed for more than an hour. There was talk above all about families, use of leisure time and
hobbies, but also understandably about work, as there tends to be on these occasions. A quick survey of the invited Blast Furnaces employees' opinions, in which they were supposed to answer the
question of what is most important for them in their work, revealed that it is occupational safety. Five of the nine guests thought this was most important. With regard to this, President David
H. Lohr asked all of them to help establish a safe environment in their workplaces and change their colleagues' way of thinking into believing that a zero accident rate is genuinely achievable.
