President David H. Lohr meets Kosice journalists
Last Thursday, on the very day of the 5th anniversary of the start of operations at U. S. Steel Kosice, a press conference was held at which USSK President
David H. Lohr met Kosice journalists. This press conference was also attended by Vice-president Strategic Implementation Anton Jura, General Counsel Kenneth R. Pepperney and Public Affairs
Director Jan Baca, who all answered questions from the journalists.
The President informed them about the priorities of U. S. Steel Kosice, which was recently declared Company of the Year by the business weekly Trend.
Occupational safety takes first place. Thanks to systematic efforts in this field, the Company's accident rate for example has been reduced by one quarter compared with the situation prior to the
USS take-over of the Kosice steelworks. In the intervening five years the Company has invested 605 million dollars into its own development, and another 420 million into developing this
region.
There was talk of the Steel Arena, whose grand opening is due to take place on February 24th next year. The President also took this opportunity to hand over a
symbolic check for a million crowns to Kosice State Philharmonia Director Julius Klein and another to Kosice State Theater Director Peter Himic. USSK is also giving a further million each to
restocking the region's libraries, assisting children's homes and promoting the project named "Professionals work safely", which aims to educate young students in the ways of safety in general.
St.Nicholas is coming to Main Street on December 5th
This year's St.Nicholas celebrations will be taking place on Main Street in Kosice on Monday, December 5th. This event, jointly prepared by the City of Kosice and
U. S. Steel Kosice, begins at 5pm with the official lighting up of the Christmas decorations. The early evening will be dedicated to the spirit of the amazing student wizard Harry
Potter.
The presenter will be taking careful note of children wearing interesting masks and costumes of this popular book and film character. The creators of the best ones
can look forward to sweet prizes. St.Nicholas will also be handing out candies. A great atmosphere will be ensured by the singer Lobo, dance group Hviezdicka and this year's Talent Night singing
contest winner Jozef Hruskoci, while a singalong program has been prepared by Uncle Balthazar and children, and there will be performances by the Maskrta puppet theater and Talostan the magician,
as well as the Aramis fireworks show.
Round table on the current steelworks situation
Last Friday, November 25th, U. S. Steel Kosice President David H. Lohr met members of the Metalurg U. S. Steel Kosice Trades Union Council for a mutual exchange of information on current issues regarding Company activities. This meeting was the second of its kind since the President's appointment to his position, and it was also attended by Vice-president Human Resources Miroslav Kiralvarga.
Safety is priority for USSK subsidiaries too
Just as for U. S. Steel Kosice, the main business priority for the Company's subsidiaries is occupational safety. Management has set itself a demanding
objective - to achieve a zero accident rate. The steps taken so far to date are already producing positive results, but nevertheless - or rather for that very reason - they have decided to devote
even more focused attention to the area of safety at work. They will be assisted in this by the Safety Council, which was set up just a few days ago.
This advisory and consultative body is meant to aid subsidiaries' management teams in dealing with issues connected with occupational safety. As indicated at the
meeting of subsidiaries' managers, they are preparing changes in the area of inspections of safety and orderliness in the workplace. In contrast to the random checks carried out by the Financial
Investments Section, the new inspections will be regular and announced.
