Steel Arena opening this Friday

Last Thursday, February 16th, there was another press conference leading up to the event of the decade - the grand official opening of the Steel Arena, the Ladislav Trojak Ice Stadium in Kosice, on Friday, February 24th 2006. Journalists heard presentations from U. S. Steel Kosice President David H. Lohr, Vice-president Strategic Implementation as well as Kosicka Arena Civic Association Vice-president Anton Jura, Kosicka Arena Civic Association President Lubomir Veme, and acting Kosice City Mayor Frantisek Knapik.
The journalists were also able to talk to John H. Goodish and his wife Kitty. "It's an honor for me to be here in this very place. For me this is a historic as well as an emotional day," said Goodish. "When I came to Kosice for the first time at the very end of 1996, everyone asked me what was going to happen with ice-hockey in Kosice. I said we had to be patient. And now I see the completed stadium as something like my 'third child' at U. S. Steel Kosice. The first was the setting-up of the VSŽ U. S. Steel joint venture at the Tin Mill, the second was the taking over of the Kosice steelworks by the U. S. Steel Corporation, and the third is this wonderful ice stadium, which the Pittsburgh hockey players would surely also be pleased with."
He went on to say that many people could share the credit for the fact that the citizens of Kosice now have this beautiful sports center - the people of Kosice themselves, the ex-Mayor Zdenko Trebula, the Government of the Slovak Republic, which released finances for the completion of the building, the members of the Kosicka Arena Civic Association, and of course many employees of U. S. Steel Kosice. At the press conference Anton Jura then presented John Goodish with honorary membership of the Kosicka Arena Civic Association and an unlimited entry pass to all events in the Steel Arena. A special seat marked with John Goodish's name will be prepared in the stadium, and whenever he comes to Kosice he will be able to see an event at the Steel Arena.

Excellent weather intensifies the enjoyment

We have experienced all kinds of Company Winter Olympic Games. People have competed in the past in thick fog, or in continuously falling snow, sometimes in frosty weather, other times in the rain, and even at temperatures of plus ten Celcius in the mud. But this year, as if to order, all the participants in the third and final part of the Winter Olympics at Jahodna last Saturday, February 18th, were favored by the weather.
It was a beautiful sunny day, and the best part of three hundred competitors were not short of good humor, nor above all of the urge to race. After the official speech and opening of the Winter Olympics by U. S. Steel Kosice President David H. Lohr, the competitors took the oath, read out on behalf of all present by Imrich Lelkes. The races were watched by almost two thousand spectators.

From February 15th to 17th U. S. Steel Kosice was visited by U. S. Steel Corporation General Manager Industrial Safety and Health Jeff Dierdorf. He met the Kosice team of occupational safety managers, annd looked around a selection of Company operations.

Job Fair in Kosice

Today, February 22nd, the House of Technology in Kosice is the venue for the Jobs and Internships Market 2006, which is being organized on the basis of good previous experience for the third time in our city by the American Chamber of Commerce in Slovakia. This event is intended mainly for university and college students and is being attended by twelve very reputable, mostly foreign companies doing business in Slovakia, including U. S. Steel Kosice.
