From monitoring to dialog

Last Friday, March 31st, Company top managers had an informal lunch together with representatives of USSK employees who last year achieved the best results in the area of monitoring. This is one of the best and most effective methods for eliminating risks in the field of occupational safety. At the lunch meeting U. S. Steel Kosice President David H. Lohr presented awards to the five best representatives of employees involved in identifying occupational safety risks. Awards were also presented to their supervisors, who take a significant share of the credit for the fact that the monitoring by employees' representatives and elimination of safety risks have been so fruitful.
The awards were accepted by employees' representatives and supervisors Jaroslav Pinko and Jan Mazuch from the sector of GM Maintenance, Miroslav Kažimir and Miroslav Macaj from the sector of GM Strip Mills, Jaroslav Ferencik and Jan Sarik from the sector of GM Non-steel Production, Peter Stolar and Miroslav Bodrog from the sector of GM Energy and Transport, and Jan Sibert and Milan Bugorcik from the sector of GM Primary. Each was presented with a HOLIDAYPASS voucher worth 4000 SKK, which they can use for various recreational purposes.
The President then appealed to all of them to pass on the message from this meeting to all of their colleagues, to spread the idea among them that every accident can be prevented, and that the zero injury target is reachable. If all employees can be convinced of this, then our goal - a zero injury rate - will become reality. During the course of this year, the President added, we want to develop monitoring at the steelworks into dialog, because we do not want simply to observe people performing their work, but to communicate with them at the same time and teach them how to work safely.

New foreign investor "sets up home" at Brzotin near Roznava

The village of Brzotin in the Rožnava region has been chosen by a new foreign investor - Dutch company CMF Group - as the location for setting up its branch by the name of CMF Slovakia s.r.o. The Dutch investor's final strategic decision was influenced by the factors of logistical potential, costs level, educational facilities, workforce availability, and last but not least also the regional policy of developing foreign business activities. A large part of the necessary information was provided to CMF Group by U. S. Steel Kosice's Economic Development Center.
According to CMF representatives, the selection of a suitable location without the assistance and support of GM Regional Development and EDC Director Juraj Augustin and his colleagues would have been very difficult. This is now the seventeenth in the series of foreign investors which the EDC has attracted to Eastern Slovakia since its establishment, and according to Juraj Augustin things are shaping up for the arrival of the eighteenth in the very near future.

This Friday is Daffodil Day

Directing public attention to the topic of the most insidious of diagnoses - cancer - but also making it known that this is a disease which in the majority of cases, if it is caught early on, can be successfully treated, together form the principal mission of Daffodil Day. This is Slovakia's largest public collection, and this Friday, April 7th 2006, it will be taking place in our city for the tenth time. It is being organized by the Anti-Cancer League in cooperation with the Kosice museums. On Friday you will be able to find young volunteers and activists from the Anti-Cancer League, as in previous years, also in the U. S. Steel Kosice Public Access Area.
