SR Prime Minister visits USSK

Following the decision to expand the European Union to include Bulgaria and Romania, the European Commission must decide how to treat shipments of steel to these two new members. USSK believes that shipments to Bulgaria and Romania should not be restricted by the current sales cap restrictions to the current EU 25. This was one of the reasons for the visit by SR Prime Minister Robert Fico to U. S. Steel Kosice, s.r.o., on Sunday, November 26th.
"What I particularly wanted to find out about, though, was the gigantic investment project for the special line which should be starting production in February next year, making galvanized sheet for the automotive industry. This is a really impressive thing. It´s good if these investment projects are starting up around Slovakia, because they are a kind of assurance that the investors are interested in remaining in this country longer, and not just in the short term. Everyone who looks at this investment must immediately realize that it is a long-term thing which is going to keep the investors here. This has been a short, but very effective visit," said the Prime Minister to journalists at the briefing.
He stressed the Slovak Government´s intention to support investors who provide people in the regions of Slovakia with well-paid work and produce goods with higher added value. "There can be no doubt that production here at U. S. Steel Kosice is also incredibly important for the automobile industry, and that the quality is world-standard. Regarding cooperation between the SR Government and U. S. Steel, we can be happy, and I´m sure we´re going to continue in this spirit. The East Slovakian region urgently needs job opportunities, so we can but support this level of interest in this kind of production and such massive investment. We should be fools if we thought otherwise," declared Fico.

Evening filled with wishes for St. Nicholas

Next Tuesday, December 5th, at 5 o'clock in the afternoon, the St. Nicholas Day program, organized for Kosice city residents by U. S. Steel Kosice, sets off this year's Kosice Christmas festivities. The show starts on the podium between the Immaculata monument and the decorated Christmas tree, when the Mayor of the City and the President of U. S. Steel Kosice together officially turn on the Christmas lights. Children's St. Nicholas Day wishes will be fulfilled by popular actor and presenter Roman Pomajbo - but of course they will have to carry out one or other of the tasks which he will have prepared for them. There's also a prize waiting for the young artist who has drawn the prettiest St. Nicholas-themed picture, Zuzana Szalonova, winner of the Ocel Vychodu competition.

USSK has own hut for Kosice Christmas

This year, for the first time in the history of Kosice Christmas, U. S. Steel Kosice will be running its own hut on the Main Street. In fact the hut will be presenting the activities of not-for-profit organizations which are supported by the Company. The hut will be open every day from 9 am to 9 pm, from December 5th to 23rd.

Metallurgy Days

On Wednesday and Thursday of last week the Secondary Technical School for Metallurgy in Kosice was the venue for the now traditional Metallurgy Days. For the official opening the school's students were joined by U. S. Steel Kosice President David H. Lohr, Vice-president Human Resources Miroslav Kiralvarga, GM HR Development and Services Milan Polca and other guests. David Lohr was thanked for USSK's wide-ranging assistance to the Metallurgy School by its Principal Ladislav Makó, who then also presented him with the school's memorial plaque to mark the occasion of the Metallurgy Days.

Successful cooperation between U. S. Steel Kosice and Velka Ida

Good communication and successful mutual cooperation have been characteristic features of the relationship between U. S. Steel Kosice and its neighboring village Velka Ida for several years. At the meeting of council leader Frantisek Snir and members of the village council with top managers from the steelworks, this point was made by representatives of both sides. Particular success has been achieved by the special employees' project, which the council leader assessed as very positive. He considers the providing of work as the greatest assistance from U. S. Steel Kosice.
