Discussions on social responsibility at USSK
On Tuesday of last week, June 26th, U. S. Steel Kosice hosted the quarterly meeting of members of the informal association of companies called Business
Leaders Forum. Almost 20 representatives of 16 firms which have set themselves the goal of being leaders in establishing the principles of socially-responsible entrepreneurship in Slovakia, came
to this meeting, which lsted the best part of two hours, to present their activities in this area.
The principal themes were voluntary and ecological programs, and the members also discussed a relatively new method of measuring results of such activities, using
the standard of community investment. The meeting continued with a plant tour taking in selected primary and finishing operations, then with visits to L. Podjavorinska Elementary School in the
Lunik IX neighborhood and the Fun-Sports Area on Alejova Street in Kosice. At these institutions, which are supported by U. S. Steel Kosice as part of the Company's philanthropical
activities, there were discussions on the aims and methods, but also the specific benefits of this support.
Discussions on steel market developments
On June 27th and 28th U. S. Steel Kosice was the venue for discussions by members of the Early Warning Group (EWG) and the Economic Committee of the European Federation of Iron and Steel Producers (EUROFER). Representatives of individual member countries presented their latest economic events and development trends in the steel-processing branches of industry. These country reports form the basis for EUROFER's quarterly analyses of development in the EU market, which can be found on the Federation's web-site. Participants in the meeting also went on a plant tour of USSK production operations.
Safety Video for July
Top-quality organization in the workplace is the fundamental method of eliminating dangers at work, which enables employees to perform their work not only more safely but more productively as well. In addition, it is the basic element in prevention of fire as well as accidents. Effective workplace organization is a continuous and never-ending process. The Safety Video for July 2007, which you will find on the USSK intranet, so that all employees can be familiarized with it, focuses on the most important features of workplace organization, and clearly shows the part played by every employee in this process.
Trucks now also use Gate No.1
Starting from June 25th, trucks entering the U. S. Steel Kosice works have been able to make use of Gate No.1 near the Steel Plants. For the time being this applies only in the afternoons and evenings, from 2 to 10 pm. This decision is intended to relieve the congestion at Gate No.4 and along the public road leading towards Haniska.
Young Slovaks in the fight of their lives
The winners of the 15th edition of the annual international indoor football tournament in Presov for under-16 children with hearing difficulties, the world's only
event for this category of disabled footballers in national teams and which is sponsored by U. S. Steel Kosice, were the players representing the Czech Republic, who bet the national
squad of Slovakia 5:2 (3:2) in the final match. This was no let-down for the Slovak players in this tournament. They improved by two places on last year's fourth spot, and they were not without
their chances in the final against the Czechs, holding them at two gols to three into the second half. They were at their happiest after their 2:1 victory over the Russians, the favorites after
winning last year's tournament, in the initial group round itself.
The great motivation for the home team was the promise by Slovak National Council Chairman Pavol Paska to organize a five-day stay for them at the SNC's recreation
center at Casta-Papiernicka, if they got through to the final game. "The children always look forward a lot to this tournament," says the enthusiastic organizer and "soul of the event" Vladimir
Kohut. "The boys from Kazachstan were even prepared for financial reasons to put up with five days of traveling to Slovakia by coach, and the team from Uzbekistan likewise, but they only had to
spend four days ech way in their bus."
