CEZ and U. S. Steel Kosice want to build a power plant
In the next few years the U. S. Steel Kosice works could become the site of a new electricity generating plant. This would be the outcome of a memorandum of understanding signed jointly by the Czech power generating company CEZ and U. S. Steel Kosice. The preliminary agreement speaks of constructing a power plant with an expected installed output of up to 400 megawatts (MW). The actual output, as well as the type of fuel to be used, will be known once the realization study has been prepared, which should be round mid-2008. "If a new electric power source is built near U. S. Steel Kosice's existing technology, we expect significant synergic effects from better usage of the already inbuilt infrastructure," Ocel Vychodu was informed with reference to the preliminary agreement between CEZ and the steel company by USSK Power Strategy and Management Director Jan Kolarcik.
No entry for trucks without warning signals
Since January 1st of this year, all trucks entering the U. S. Steel Kosice works area have had to be equipped with visible and audible warning signaling indicating the lifting of the tipping apparatus, or so-called tipper. The obligation to install warning signals for the lifting of a truck's tipper is an outcome of the latest occupational safety and health protection project. Entry to the works for trucks lacking warning signaling is not permitted. "In the first few days of this year we turned several trucks away from the gates into U. S. Steel Kosice, because they didn't have the required signaling," Ocel Vychodu was informed by U. S. Steel Kosice - SBS, s.r.o. Director Gabriel Lörinc. "We caught the last two trucks without signaling at Gate No.1 on January 11th. It looks like the drivers and owners of trucks are now sufficiently informed and have taken the necessary steps."
New style Costs-saving Program for 2008
Last year's results from the Costs-saving Program at U. S. Steel Kosice are pleasing. Although the plan appeared bold, we fulfilled it and even exceeded it. Every good idea which was successfully transformed into a particular implemented project moved our Company another step forwards on the road towards success and competitiveness. The greatest share of input into the program came from the Steel Plants, joined by Purchasing, Maintenance Management, Blast Furnaces, Cold Strip Mill, Coated Products, Hot Strip Mill and the Power Division. Of course, everyone who participated in the program, whether as originators of ideas, project managers or implementers, deserves thanks, and that includes people in the subsidiaries, in Mechanika, Research and Development. Quality Management, Transport, Best Practices, Repairs, Servicing, Shipping, Cokery, Power Strategy, BSCe, Secondary Metallurgy, Production Technology Security or Ecology. This year 2008 means further challenges for us in this field, says the Head of the Strategic Programs Implementation Section Eugen Lenorovic.
We won't stop helping, we're going to continue
Last Thursday, January 10th, U. S. Steel Kosice President David H. Lohr met the organizers of the Wishing Trees project on Company premises to thank them for their initiative in carrying out this successful charity project. He directed his thanks particularly to all employees of USSK and its subsidiaries, as well as visitors to the steelworks either on business or otherwise, who bought gifts and thus fulfilled the wishes of the children in four foster homes in our region. He promised the employees who were actively involved in the Wishing Trees and Kosice Christmas projects that the Company would not be stopping its support for this exceptional project initiated by the President's wife, Susan Lohr, and that it would be continuing with it also in future years.
