Metallurgy School opens special classroom
The shared goal of U. S. Steel Kosice and the Secondary Vocational School for Metallurgy in Saca is that the students should acquire not only specialist knowledge and skills, but also occupational safety habits and a sense of responsibility. Future steelmakers will be able to acquire the latter in a new, special occupational safety and health classroom which the school has put together in close cooperation with specialists in the field of occupational safety and health at U. S. Steel Kosice over the last few months. The room was officially opened for use on Wednesday of last week, February 20th.
US Ambassador Vincent Obsitnik meets businesspeople
Businesspeople in the East Slovakian region who are members of the American Chamber of Commerce in the Slovak Republic (AmCham) met for an official reception in Kosice's historical town hall on February 21st, also attended by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America in the Slovak Republic Mr. Vincent Obsitnik. In his speech, Mr. Obsitnik mentioned the areas he intends to focus on during his period of work in Slovakia. Above all this means supporting the investment activities of American companies. He wants to pay special attention to Eastern Slovakia in particular, which is disadvantaged by long-term high unemployment and the lack of transport links with the western part of the country.
HN Club discusses economic growth prospects in Eastern Slovakia
Representatives of industry, finance, commerce, science and public life, participants in the HN Club organized by the daily Economic News, met in Kosice on February 21st to discuss the prospects for economic growth in Eastern Slovakia. SR Minister for the Economy Lubomir Jahnatek spoke about the principal forms of state support. American companies established in Eastern Slovakia shared details of their experience with the American Ambassador in Slovakia Mr. Vincent Obsitnik. U. S. Steel Kosice President David H. Lohr gave his assessment of eight years of the Company's activity here. He remarked that the commitments made by the parent company on taking over the steelworks are being consistently fulfilled. The business priorities are safe and healthy working conditions, stable employment, responsibility towards the environment, and good neighborly relations. He informed the audience that through the activities of the Economic Development Center, 26 new investors had been successfully attracted to this region, creating 4200 job opportunities.
U. S. Steel Kosice ice-hockey champions are the Management team
Saturday, February 23rd, saw the final matches completing the U. S. Steel Kosice Ice-hockey Championships 2008. The two starting groups had 12 teams altogether, eight of which went through to the quarter-finals. The winning quartet contesting the medals were then the Steel Plants, Blast Furnaces, Management and Transport teams. The champions' title was won by the players from Management, which means they are now the happy winners of the champions' title and the precious trophy, the U. S. Steel Kosice President's Challenge Cup, for the fourth time in a row. The victorious squad was reinforced, just like last year, by American managers Michael Rogers and Michael Duff. The silver medals were won by Transport, and bronze went to the Steel Plants.
