Best students strengthen ranks of Kosice steelmakers

The official assembly marking the close of the school year 2007/2008 at the Metallurgical Vocational School including the passing out of the graduates took place on Thursday of last week, June 26th, attended by U. S. Steel Kosice President George F. Babcoke, GM Human Resources Sourcing and Development Milan Polca and other guests from the Kosice steelworks, for which the school is like a breeder of new workers. In the past school year 55 boys and girls passed the final exams in the specializations of repair mechanic for machines and equipment, electro-mechanic and mechanic-mechatronic. Sixteen of the best students graduating with distinction came to strengthen the ranks of U. S. Steel Kosice employees yesterday, July 1st.

Internship 2008 - Priceless experience

For the best part of sixty college students, mainly from the Technical University in Kosice, yesterday, July 1st, saw the beginning of two months' summer internship at U. S. Steel Kosice. This is now the seventh time that fourth-year students - especially future metallurgists, finance and accounts specialists, electrical and mechanical engineers - are getting the opportunity to gain invaluable on-the-spot experience in workplaces around the Company and its subsidiaries, to find out how the firm works in practice.
All of them have been familiarized with the basic information about the steelworks, and they have been through induction training in occupational safety. For the first three days in each working week they will be involved in the working process in the divisional plants and sections they have been allocated to, but on Thursdays and Fridays, as is now traditional, they will be given guided tours and management training in various areas of business activity. In mid-August they start work on their assigned case studies. The culmination of this two-month work experience comes with the presentation of their results to USSK top management.

Slag heap used for non-dangerous waste dumping

In the fenced-off waste management area in the close vicinity of U. S. Steel Kosice, a new non-dangerous waste-dump can be seen rising. This dumping project has three phases - the start of the first is planned for this month, and the completion of the third in October 2016. The sealing and recultivation of the dump represents the fourth stage in the years 2024 - 2025. "This dump is going to have an area of 127 950 square meters, but its total capacity will be 3 935 000 cubic meters, which means around 9 440 000 tons of waste," says project manager Julius Hobor from the Engineering Activities Section, giving Ocel Vychodu the basic dimensions.
"The working life of this dump, with an expected waste disposal rate of 600 000 tons a year, will be fifteen years. It's going to be used exclusively by the steel company operations." The new dump is being created in the south-western part of what is known as the slag-heap management area, where the steelworks has been disposing of its waste since 1965. In the last few years its usage and partial recycling has been the responsibility of the company Heckett MultiServ Slovensko s.r.o. Kosice. The non-dangerous waste-dump will be fully compliant with the requirements of current waste management legislation. The first phase of the project is to last from July to December 2008.
