Support for Eastern Slovakia
The grant program entitled Together for the Region, set up by the Carpathian Foundation in cooperation with U. S. Steel Kosice, has this year been extended
to eleven organizations. The evaluating panel, composed of representatives from the steel company and experts from NGO's and local government, looked at a total of 47 projects. The successful
applicants received symbolic checks for 33 193.91 EUR (1 000 000 SKK) personally from U. S. Steel Kosice President George F. Babcoke following the official announcement of the panel's
conclusions Tuesday, April 21st. Joining in the congratulations was Kosice Self-governing Region Chairman Zdenko Trebula.
The mission of the Together for the Region program is to support community projects implemented directly by citizens and local groups. These very worthwhile
projects, which also involve the participation of steelworks employees, focus on leisure-time activities for children and young people, preserving cultural values, environmental education and
upbringing, as well as on safety and untraditional sports activities.
Steelmakers support fight against cancer
Last Friday, April 17th, in Slovakia saw the thirteenth annual public-benefit fund-raising day organized by the Anti-Cancer League with the aim of aiding and supporting people suffering from cancer. And once again, this year's Daffodil Day met with a great response from the steelmakers. Volunteers managed to collect 3 228 EUR (97 246.73 SKK) on Company premises. All those who contributed to the collection deserve a vote of thanks for this very nice result, because by buying a daffodil, the symbol of spring and of hope, they proved that even in this time of economic crisis they do not hesitate to share what they have in order to help the sick.
Steel company contributes towards new school sports ground
The one thousand and more pupils at the Bruselska Street Elementary School in the Kosice city ward Tahanovce have waited fourteen years to get their own outdoor sports ground - but this Monday, April 20th, finally saw the official opening of their new, all-weather-surfaced soccer pitch. This makes it the second pitch in the town with a 90 x 46 meter playing area, which fulfills the criteria for playing championship matches in the Under-16 category. The sports ground is complete with timing equipment, players' benches and spectators' bleachers, and it will be used by the school soccer players taking part in the Under-16 league, other soccer talents, and also by football-tennis players. The building of this sports ground cost nearly 415 000 EUR (12.5 million SKK), and involved the City of Kosice, the SR Ministry of Education, the Tahanovce city ward, the Bruselska Street Elementary School, parents of the school's pupils, and independent sponsors including U. S. Steel Kosice.
