Serbian slabs handled by USSK Transport Division
Cooperation with U. S. Steel Serbia, our sister company within U. S. Steel Europe, is proving its worth these days, with the Serbian steelmakers producing slabs for the Kosice rolling mills. Their transferral from the USSK railway sidings at Haniska to the pusher furnaces at the Hot Strip Mill is being carried out for the first time by USSK Transport Division. The first opportunity to try out similar cooperation came at the very beginning of this year, when coal, coke and slabs too were sent to Serbia, and then in May and June it was the turn of scrap to be unloaded from the USS Serbia wagons, and slabs again to be dispatched back. While the Serbian wagons were in the USSK sidings they were repaired as well. This cooperation is advantageous for both sides. Using the Company's own wagons for transport is cheaper, so long as they are fully laden both ways of course, and it is not necessary to pay for standing time in the Company's sidings. The first 19 wagon-loads of Serbian slabs have already been "chased" through the pusher furnaces by the Kosice rolling mill employees, and further deliveries will be coming to the steelworks at intervals till the end of August.
Families Do Sport for the third time
The pleasant surroundings of the Fun-Sports Area on Alejova Street in Kosice formed the venue last Saturday, August 1st, for the third edition of the annual event named Families Do Sport. Lovely summer weather attracted more than 240 small and large steelmakers to join in competitions of soccer, volleyball, table-tennis, darts and chess. The organizers, U. S. Steel Kosice Public Relations Department, had prepared a full program for everyone, including the smallest children. As a refreshing change from the competitions on this very successful day, there were demonstrations of the work of fire-fighters, rescue teams, dog handlers and traffic police, autograph sessions with the HC Kosice ice-hockey players, and a musical entertainment program with performances by participants in the Talent Night contests, which were also organized by the Kosice steel company.
Students' summer internship ends
The summer internship for 33 university students at U. S. Steel Kosice culminated in the last few days with presentations of their case studies before the evaluating committee. The participants were expected to demonstrate their ability to synthesize and benefit from all the knowledge and experience acquired in the workplaces they had been assigned to, or from the training courses intended for developing their managerial skills. On Friday of this week the interns will be meeting with Company managers to make their joint assessment of the whole course of the students' month of work in the Company.
