OPEN DAY AT THE TU IN KOSICE
An event full of fun and information for elementary school pupils and secondary school students with the motto Safety For Life was started off on Friday, October 16th, during the Open Day at the Technical University in Kosice by TU Kosice Rector Anton Cizmar and U. S. Steel Kosice President George F. Babcoke. The University has a strong position, Rector Cizmar said to his young audience, and it could also be an important factor in their future. The University's unconditional mission is to cooperate with industrial companies, including preparing specialists for practical work in line with their requirements. U. S. Steel Kosice is one of the University's significant strategic partners. "We have many joint activities - creating laboratories and lecture rooms, or the summer internships for our students at the steelworks. And what is equally important, the Company offers our graduates work," the Rector stressed. The young visitors were also greeted by USSK President George F. Babcoke, who drew their attention to the Company's priority concern, safety.
KOSICE INVEST 2009
The first international investment conference entitled Kosice Invest 2009 - Invest in the East is being organized by the city in cooperation with the American Chamber of Commerce in Slovakia this Thursday, October 22nd, in the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel. The aim of the conference is to inform potential investors about the current state of investment in the city and to present suitable locations for establishment here. The participants will also get information about the investment strategy of the city and the region, and about possibilities for supporting investment using structural funds or resources from the state or local government. A presentation entitled "Support for development of science, research and innovation, and transfer of results of development and innovation into practice" will be given by U. S. Steel Kosice President George F. Babcoke.
MEETINGS WITH USSK LONG-TERM EMPLOYEES RECOMMENCE
The first of three meetings this year with employees who have worked for U. S. Steel Kosice for 30, 35 and 40 years took place last Friday, October 16th, in the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel in Kosice. The celebratory meeting with Company management and trade union representatives was attended by more than 150 invitees (with their partners) from the Cokery, Mechanics, Repairs, Transport and Power Engineering divisions. Appreciation for the many years of work for the Company by these employees was expressed by U. S. Steel Kosice President George F. Babcoke and Metalurg USSK Trade Union Council Chairman Mikulas Hintos. The employees received silver and gold medals and letters of appreciation. Those who had completed 40 years of employment also received wristwatches.
INTERNATIONAL ATTENTION TO POVERTY ISSUES
Problems of the poorest sections of the population, including social marginalization, and possibilities for dealing with them were raised last week by representatives of the third sector, the church and the academic community, local government, state administration and the business sphere, at a conference during the Social Activities Fair which took place in Kosice on October 15th to 17th, on the occasion of the International Day of the Fight Against Poverty. A presentation entitled "Issues of poverty in the activity of large companies" was given by USSK Vice President Human Resources Martin Pitorak, who informed the conference participants about USSK's activities in the field of corporate social responsibility.
