Visitors at U. S. Steel Kosice
A working visit was paid to U. S. Steel Kosice on December 2nd and 3rd by Senior Vice President - Strategic Planning, Business Services & Administration David H. Lohr, accompanied by BSC managers from Pittsburgh. During his stay in Kosice he had discussions with Vice President BSC-Europe Traci Lynn Vaughan, and with other BSC-Europe managers. He also met key employees in the Commercial, Operations and BSCe divisions who are users of the new information system for supplier chain management. There was another two-day visit to U. S. Steel Kosice on the same dates by legal representatives of the USS Corporation from headquarters in Pittsburgh - James D. Garraux, General Counsel & Senior Vice President - Corporate Affairs and Joseph A. Napoli, Senior General Attorney Corporate from the Legal Department. Both had meetings with members of the top management of the Kosice steelworks.
A million man-hours of work without injury
The latest division of U. S. Steel Kosice to join those which can boast of achieving a million man-hours of work without injury is the Radiators and Pipes Division. The last injury was registered here on September 27th, 2008, and the employees have worked since then more than 440 days without incident. This fact did not escape the attention of U. S. Steel Kosice President George F. Babcoke or Vice President Operations Patrick J. Mullarkey, who met nine representatives of "secondary manufacturing" for a working lunch on December 9th last week. Everyone around the table agreed that the great majority of employees come to work with the intention of returning home safe and sound. George F. Babcoke pointed out that the injuries that have happened at USSK this year were not connected with workplace conditions, but most of them happened because people tried to make work easier for themselves. In many cases, though, they threatened not only themselves but also their fellow workers. "For this very reason the most important thing for everyone is communication, especially at supervisor or shift foreman level," the President stressed once again.
Christmas benefit concert
The "Wishing Tree" Christmas benefit concert, which took place on Friday of last week, December 11th, in the State Theater in Kosice, was the culmination of the year-round charity activity by U. S. Steel Kosice. This year the steelmakers fulfilled the wishes of children in the foster homes in Medzilaborce and Vranov nad Toplou and disabled children at the Opatovska Street School in Kosice. As well as the dreamed-of gifts which Company employees bought for the children in response to their cards hung on the Wishing Trees, at the concert the representatives of all three institutions also collected symbolic checks each worth 8 500 euros. USSK employees also joined in the fund-raising for the Casualty Surgery Clinic in Kosice. Just as in the past, their contributions were matched by the Company and by the U. S. Steel Kosice Foundation, which meant that the total value of the financial assistance was tripled. Altogether the steelmakers donated 92 975 euros to the Clinic, which will be used to purchase a special operating table.
