Ten years since Memorandum of Understanding was signed
Ten years ago, March 24th, 2000, representatives of the Government of the Slovak Republic and the American concern U. S. Steel signed a Memorandum of Understanding confirming the takeover by U. S. Steel of the East Slovakian Steelworks in Kosice. In April 2000 U. S. Steel's parent company, USX Corporation, approved the intention to purchase the operations and assets of VSZ directly linked with steelmaking. The Memorandum of Understanding was approved by VSZ shareholders in May 2000.
Honorary title Dr.h.c. for George F. Babcoke
At the ceremonial session of the Scientific Council of the Technical University in Kosice on March 18, 2010, the Rector Anton Cizmar personally presented U. S. Steel Kosice President George F. Babcoke with the title of Doctor honoris causa (Dr h c.). This honor, received before the University Honors Board and in the presence of members of his family, dozens of colleagues from the Kosice steelworks, members of the local government and authorities, and representatives of partner colleges and universities in Slovakia and abroad, has been granted to George Babcoke in recognition of his status as an internationally acknowledged personality in the steelmaking industry on a European but also worldwide scale, and of his active support for cooperation between USSK and the TU in Kosice.
Where and How We're Going to Live for the seventh time
Seven ecological projects prepared by pupils and teachers at elementary schools in the Kosice Region as part of the grant program Where and How We're Going to Live are to be supported by U. S. Steel Kosice. This has been decided by the selection committee made up of representatives of the Kosice steelworks, non-governmental organizations, the Office of the Kosice Self-governing Region, the local authoroties and the pupils themselves. Symbolic checks to fund the projects' implementation, with a grand total value of 6700 a, were presented to representatives of the winning schools on March 22nd, World Water Day.
U. S. Steel Kosice Volunteer Days coming up in May
For the second time now, the Volunteer Days are taking place as part of the U. S. Steel Kosice for Kosice program. Just as in previous years, the employees of U. S. Steel Kosice and its subsidiary companies will once again be able to choose from several activities concentrated into two days - May 14th and 15th. This year the steelmakers will be supporting the geriatric center, botanical gardens, Rubikon autistic center, animal shelter, the Zoo, and a special elementary school, and there will be a collection of clothes, bed-linen, kitchen utensils and books for socially-dependent people. This event will be starting off with the Steelmakers' Drop of Blood volunteer donors drive.
Richard A. Epstein in Kosice
The series of lectures on economics by Professor Richard A. Epstein, who is considered as one of the most important and influential classico-liberal thinkers in the areas of law and economics, presented in Vienna, Bratislava and Kosice, where U. S. Steel Kosice was partner to the event, has been treated with extraordinary interest by students and lay people alike. Epstein caught their attention with his stimulating and untraditional interpretation of the economic and legal bases of a free society.
