The Slovak minister of labour, family, and social affairs Jozef Mihal at USSK
On Friday August 20th, U. S. Steel Kosice welcomed Jozef Mihal, the minister of labour, family and social affairs of the Slovak Republic. Along with company president George F. Babcoke, vicepresidents Miroslav Kiralvarga, Martin Pitorak and other managers, he had talks concerning various matters related to improving the quality of the business environment in Slovakia. The minister took interest in the opinions of the company representatives, the largest employer in eastern Slovakia, as to the prepared legislative changes, be they concerning the Labour code, collective bargaining statutes and minmum wages, as well as further work provisions. He appreciated the fact that the company U. S. Steel Kosice, unique to the region, employs people from socially disadvantaged groups.
Visit of the American ambassador to the SR, Theodore Sedgwick
The new American ambassador to the Slovak Republic, Theodore Sedgwick, arrived for a visit at U. S. Steel Kosice on Tuesday, August 31st. The successor to Vincent Obsitnik, who finished his diplomatic mission in Bratislava on January 20th 2009, met with the president of the steel making company George Babcoke, and undertook and inspection of the facilities for continuous casting of steel to slab at the division plant Oceliaren, observed the hot wide track at the Hot rolling mill and the galvanizing line #3 at the Heat teatment division plant and coating line. His stay at USSK was concluded with a working lunch with company leaders.
Future metallurgists seated at their desks
After a two month break, today on the 2nd of September the gates have been opened for hundreds of students of middle and vocational schools with whom the company U. S. Steel Kosice has been cooperating in the educational process and preparation for their future line of work. The source of this qualified workforce for the Kosice steelworks has remained, alongside the Secondary school of metallurgy in Kosice, the Vocational School in Kosice-Saca - currently preparing for the requirements of USSK 382 pupils, the Railway Vocational School in Kosice, and the Technical Vocational School in Kosice.
Metal Inspirations, the eighth edition
At the eighth edition of the international workshop Metal Inspirations, which from the period from the 23rd until the 31st of August had been organized by the department of design of the Faculty of arts TU Kosice, U. S. Steel Kosice and the metallurgical SOS in Kosice - Saca, 24 students of design met together with the educators from high schools and universities from Germany, Hungary, Scotland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The ten-day workshop took place using the themes We support safety and a healthy environment and Welcome to Kosice. The exhibition of work can be seen at the Slovak technical museum in Kosice until October 3rd 2010.
