U. S. Steel Kosice Volunteer Days for the fifth time
Kosice's steelmakers have contributed to the European Year of Volunteering 2011 in truly exemplary manner. On Friday and Saturday of last week (June 17 and 18), more
than 500 employees of U. S. Steel Kosice, its subsidiary companies and partner institutions, as well as students on USSK university scholarships, joined in the fifth edition of the
annual corporate event known as U. S. Steel Kosice Volunteer Days. This was also part of the Our City - Our Kosice event, a series of activities in towns and cities throughout Slovakia,
and in Kosice the volunteers came together to help nine organizations with their public-benefit activities.
The Volunteer Days started off with the Steelmakers' Drop of Blood call to blood donors, and altogether 85 volunteers came to give some of this most valuable of all
liquids at the Hematology and Transfusions Department of Kosice-Saca Hospital. Others later made use of the opportunity to contribute to the collection of clothes, footwear and household goods
for various charity organizations. Thanks to the kind of people who do not hesitate to spend their free time and effort altruistically, benefiting other people and good causes, a good deal of
work was successfully accomplished at the Rubikon Autistic Center in Myslava, Kosice Zoo and the Botanical Gardens, the Sosna Ecological Education Center in Druzstevna pri Hornade, the Animal
Shelter at Haniska, and at the special kindergarten for disabled children on Ludova Street in Kosice.
Great interest in summer work
Around 300 young people, fresh graduates of secondary technical and vocational schools in Kosice and its environs, have applied for paid summer jobs at U. S. Steel Kosice during the summer holidays. The applicants with the best chance of success were those who had studied a specialization matching the needs of the steelworks production plants, who had achieved good results at school, and who had already gained some work experience at USSK. A good state of health as well as valid certificates from specialist courses were understandably also decisive factors. In just a few days' time, on July 1, it will be primarily students from the partner schools of the Kosice steelworks who start their summer jobs with the Company on the basis of the completed selection procedure.
Families do sport in a safe way this coming Saturday
This coming Saturday, June 25, the Fun Sports Area on Alejova Street is the venue for the popular event known as Families Do Sport. Soccer, streetball, table-tennis, dance aerobics or darts are the disciplines which will be testing the sporting skills as well as the physical condition of the steelmakers and their offspring who have entered the event. The last activity mentioned in particular is enjoying increasing popularity every year. Those who are interested will be able to take part non-competitively in trying out the new game of speed badminton, or brushing up their accuracy by playing petanque, and the road safety playground will be available for the children as well. Participants will be entertained by a rich accompanying program featuring appearances by well-known singers and sports personalities, including the attraction of an autograph session with the ice-hockey players of HC Kosice. This Saturday's event promises some thrilling contests in the spirit of fair play.
