George F. Babcoke visits Kosice steelmakers
This week, from November 7 to 11, the Kosice operation of United States Steel Corporation is being visited by Senior Vice President - Europe & Global Operations Services George F. Babcoke. He has been in meeting with President David J. Rintoul and the USSK team about the opera-tions at the steelworks, he has had a meeting with middle management, and he will be visiting several of the production plants during his visit.
Awards received for years of quality work
On Friday, October 28, the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel in Kosice was the venue for the second of this year's meetings with long-term employees of the Company, marking 30, 35, 40 and 45 years of their work at the steelworks. Celebrators from the Hot and Cold Rolling Mills and the Radiators and Pipes Divisions, as well as from subsidiaries U. S. Steel Kosice - Labortest, s. r.o. a U.S. Steel Kosice - SBS, s. r. o., were thanked for their work and their loyalty by members of Company management led by USSK President David J. Rintoul.
Steelmakers' success in EKO 2011 competition
The ninth edition of the national round of the annual international competition EKO 2011, which is intended to support activities aimed at protecting and improving
the environment in Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Poland, was another successful one for Kosice steelmakers.
In the category Organizations and Employees of Organizations, second place was awarded to Jaroslav Parnahaj from USSK subsidiary Refrako for the project "Ecological
plastic material for stopping blast-furnace tap-holes", and third place was taken by the team of Daniel Kacir, Jan Socha and Roman Gburik from USSE Research and Development, who entered the
competition with their project "Elimination of phenols from the tin-plating production process at U. S. Steel Kosice".
Honorable recognition for the project "Laboratory assessment of biomass usage in sinter production at U. S. Steel Kosice" was awarded to their colleagues
in USSE R&D Alica Maslejova, Rudolf Zelinsky, Jan Tomas and Peter Vlasic.
We want good neighbor relations
On November 2 U. S. Steel Kosice President David J. Rintoul and Vice President Management Services and Administration Elena Petraskova visited Velka Ida,
the neighboring village to the steelworks, on the invitation of the local mayor Julius Beluscsak.
At this first joint meeting with the local council members, which was also attended by the Director of the Office for Employment, Social and Family Affairs in Kosice
Beata Horvathova, the participants informed each other about the current situation in the village and at the steelworks, visited the local elementary school, which is one of the biggest in the
Kosice Environs District with more than 500 pupils, and looked round the site where the new hockeyball pitch is being built in Velka Ida, thanks also to financial support from the Kosice
steelworks.
The Equality of Opportunity project run by U. S. Steel Kosice, as a result of which more than fifty socially-disadvantaged village residents work at the
steelworks on the basis of personnel leasing, thus reducing unemployment in Velka Ida, was praised by the local mayor and by the Employment Office director, who was previously directly involved
in developing the project.
