Cokery with two million injury-free hours
At the beginning of last year the employees of the Cokery Division achieved success in the form of one million hours worked without injury, and just a few days ago they managed to double that success. On Sunday, February 10, they credited their account with two million injury-free employee-hours - an outstanding result for this division with its wide range of various risk-involving activities. This team has proved that it is possible to work long-term without any harm to health even in difficult conditions. To mark the occasion of this achievement, on February 19 selected employees were invited to a working lunch with U. S. Steel Kosice President David J. Rintoul. At this meeting they discussed current issues associated with the topic of safety in the Company's workplaces.
Awards for best employees
The names are now known of the originators of the best projects in 2012 linked with the six business principles of U. S. Steel Kosice. On Friday, February 15, the most successful employees were presented with awards at the Centrum Hotel in Kosice. Awards were presented for the three best projects in the categories of Safety, Environment, Customer Services, Quality, Productivity and Costs Saving (CCIP). The special award for Best Employee of the Year 2012 went to Cokery Division Director Otto Viszlay.
Savings produced by almost 190 projects
In 2012 the continuous costs improvement program was actively supported by 16 teams of employees. During the year savings were produced by the best part of 190 approved CCIP projects. The greatest savings arose from projects focusing on economies in materials, with a 53 per cent share of the total, followed by projects aimed at reducing current expenditure (19 per cent), and energy-saving projects (18 per cent). The leaders in terms of amounts of demonstrated savings were the Blast Furnaces, Steel Plants, Procurement and Strategic Raw Materials teams.
How much for a book of recipes
Last year's voluntary fund-raising by the Kosice steelmakers for the purchase of a digital mammograph machine for Saca Hospital was also supported by the implementation of an idea by Mary Rintoul, wife of USSK President David J. Rintoul, to publish a previously untraditional steelmakers' cookery book. The resulting USSK Family Cookbook 2012 with 150 tried-and-tested recipes came out in a dual-language, Slovak and English version, in an imprint of 1100 copies. The gross proceeds from the public fund-raising came to 5 591.30 euros.
Volunteer Days 2013
The seventh volunteer event entitled U. S. Steel for Kosice takes place this year on May 17 and 18. Apart from the usual collection of clothes and other requirements for the Archdiocesan Charity in Kosice and the Oasis - Hope for a New Life Charity Home in Bernatovce, and the traditional Steelmakers' Drop of Blood donor drive, employees and their families will be able to help by providing manual work for eight organizations. Since this is our city's year as European Capital of Culture, these include State Philharmonia in Kosice.
