Further opportunities for cooperation take shape
Assessment of the cooperation during the past year and outlining possibilities and directions for its future development were the main objectives of the now
traditional annual meeting of representatives from U. S. Steel Kosice and its partner institution the Technical University of Kosice, which took place on Friday of last week, January
31, 2014.
Both sides reiterated the importance of the closest possible linkage between study and practice. The partners intend to orientate the cooperation in the coming
period among other things towards profiling the study specializations which should correspond best with the requirements of practice, developing joint projects which could be financed from EU
structural funds, and dealing with tasks facing USSK in connection with the process of transformation of the company.
How to reduce power consumption levels in the steel industry
At the end of last year, after spending the best part of three years working in the World Steel Association (WSA), Ladislav Horvath returned home to Kosice, and in
January of this year he joined the team of U. S. Steel Kosice Vice President Energy, Environment and Technical Inspection as Manager for Environment and Technology. In Beijing he worked
on the project for reduction of power consumption levels in the steel industry, an undertaking involving 22 steelmaking corporations and three associations from all over the world.
They have developed a new methodology model for calculating power consumption levels in steel production which is to be introduced in the future as a new ISO
standard. They have also prepared an online system with a very simple and userfriendly interface which enables the power consumption levels in steelmaking processes to be analyzed. Information
and data for this project were provided by 47 steelmaking operations from around the world, including U. S. Steel Kosice.
Cyclists and walkers, welcome to the Hornad Microregion
A lot of work has been done by the members and supporters of the Friends of Trstene Countryside civic association, which has been run for several years now by
Rastislav Selepsky from the Steel Plants Division, for improving the recreational areas in the Old Hornad valley. Since last year cyclists and walkers alike visiting this area have been able to
enjoy using it to the full.
An indisputable plus for the project named "Cyclists and walkers, welcome to the Hornad Microregion", supported last year by U. S. Steel Kosice and the
Carpathian Foundation with a grant through the Together for the Region program, is the fact that it improves the environment, creating and enhancing conditions for outdoor activities, and
stimulating a sense of belonging and joint responsibility among the people of this region. The project focused on providing basic services for cyclists and walkers passing through the village of
Trstene pri Hornade, whether on the international or the local cycle trails.
USSK Champions ice-hockey tournament in full swing
For the third week now the Steel Arena in Kosice has been the venue for the continuing fight to find the ice-hockey Champions of U. S. Steel Kosice. The tournament, which forms part of the corporate Winter-sports Games, has a rich history, with its 47th edition currently being held. The title is being defended by the Steel Plants team, the victors of the last four years' competitions. If they succeed in winning again this year, they will equal the record of the Management team with five titles in a row in the years 2005 to 2009. The Steel Plants players are not going to have an easy task, however, because there are eleven other teams who are intent on interrupting this series and lifting the traveling USSK President's Cup above their heads for themselves.
