Kosice City Award for George F. Babcoke

The Kosice City Day celebrations culminated last Wednesday, May 7, with an official ceremony incorporating the presentation of awards to individuals and groups who have contributed in a significant way to the development of the metropolis of Eastern Slovakia. This year the members of the City Council voted to confer the Kosice City Award to twelve individuals and three groups altogether. One of those individuals is U. S. Steel Kosice President George F. Babcoke, for his special efforts in support of the Kosice - European Capital of Culture 2013 project and his personal commitment to setting up the Steel Park/Creative Factory.
The audience filling the Great Chamber of the Historical Town Hall heard the following presentation before the President of the Kosice steelworks received his award: "George F. Babcoke has more than thirty years of experience working in the steelmaking industry. Since July 1, 2013 he has been in the position of President of U. S. Steel Kosice for the second time. Initially he was President of the Kosice steelmaking company in the period from March 1, 2008 until December 31, 2010. He was enthusiastic about the Kosice - European Capital of Culture 2013 project because he saw great potential in it for the further development of the metropolis of Eastern Slovakia. He was one of the initiators setting up the Coalition 2013+, aiming to gain as many partners as possible for the project and make effective use of the accumulated human, material and financial resources."
George F. Babcoke received his award from Kosice City Mayor Richard Rasi and Deputy Mayors Renata Lenartova and Jan Jakubov, and then signed his entry in the City Chronicle.

Air Quality Protection projects now center of attention

At the end of April U. S. Steel Kosice was visited by a group of experts from the Department for Air Quality Protection of the SR Ministry for Environment and from the Slovakian Hydro-Meteorological Institute. Together with Company representatives they discussed the potential and intensity of drawing financial resources from the European Structural and Investment Funds for implementing emissions reduction projects as part of the Environmental Quality operational program for the period 2014 - 2020.

QMS recertification audit started on Monday

This Monday, May 12, saw the beginning at U. S. Steel Kosice of a five-day recertification audit of the quality management system in line with the technical specifications of ISO standard TS 16949. Just as in other years, this audit focuses on checking the efficience of processes within the Company. The aim of the audit is to demonstrate that the Company fulfills the requirements of the EN ISO 9001 standard, and above all the demanding criteria of the technical specifications of ISO/TS 16949 for the supply of products to the automobile industry. The findings of the audit will be known this Friday, May 16.

Kosice steelworks representatives win two medals

Last Wednesday, May 7, 47 firefighters from Kosice, Bratislava, Michalovce, Spisska Nova Ves, Trebisov, Nove Mesto nad Vahom, Roznava and Olomouc lined up for the start of the international competition named Iron Firefighter 2014, organized by the District Headquarters of the Firefighting and Rescue Brigade in Kosice. Among them, as has become a good custom, were representatives of the U. S. Steel Kosice Works Firefighting Unit: Adrian Ficik, Ondrej Kopkas, Michal Onda, Lukas Malik, Michal Kosturak and Marian Velk. In this especially demanding competition for physical vigor, the title of Iron Firefighter 2014 was won by Adrian Ficik, and the USSK firefighters took second place in the team competition.
