How to increase employees' engagement with the goals of occupational safety

Occupational safety has always been and always will be the primary and key value at U. S. Steel Kosice. We draw up new goals every year for improving the results in this area. Incidents involving and not involving injury are investigated and monitored, and remedial measures are implemented, for example safe working procedures, and audits, inspections and training sessions are organized to ensure that risky events are not repeated, says USSK General Manager Occupational Safety and Hygiene and REACH Mark Thomas Salo. But how can such incidents and injuries be prevented? The answer is the active engagement of every employee in the occupational safety process. Engagement means active involvement, and to increase the opportunities for employees' engagement the Company has developed measurable goals. These goals will help us to achieve a better standard of results in the area of occupational safety on the way to our ultimate goal of zero injuries.

Our employees among the five best in Europe

Production of steel in an oxygen converter for use in the construction industry with the required quality and with the lowest possibly costs: this was the task for the competitors in the regional championships of the world-wide 24-hour competition known as the Virtual Steelmaking Challenge, which took place on December 17 and 18 last year. These championships were entered by eight young graduate steelmakers from U. S. Steel Kosice. The competition in this edition of the Challenge was unusually tough, with a total of 1566 teams and 1922 individuals representing 34 different countries. Our two pairs both finished among the best five in the Europe, Africa and Middle East Region. Marcel Piko and Ladislav Karaffa from the Steel Plants Division took fourth place, and Ondrej Tóth from the Cold Rolling Mill Division together with Patrik Farkas from the Blast Furnaces Division took fifth place. A team from over the ocean was also successful, with Nichole Asermely and Adam Burkett from U. S. Steel in Pittsburgh taking fifth place in the North and South Americas Region.

Collected money will help the development of public-benefit activities
