Thirteenth edition of annual Summer Internship starts

Building up experience which cannot be acquired any other way than by working in the company itself, that is the aim of 39 college and university students from Slovakia and abroad who started last week, July 1st, on their two-month summer internship at U. S. Steel Kosice. The organizing team from the section of Vice President Human Resources Martin Pitorak has prepared a program for the students following the already tried and tested formula.
For the first three days of each week they will "cut their teeth" directly in the workplaces they are assigned to in primary operations, one of the subsidiaries or a specialist department, where they will take part in dealing with various tasks and projects under the supervision of their mentors. Thursdays and Fridays will be spent on personal development by means of training sessions in management skills. The conclusion of this 14th edition of the annual summer internship will consist of preparation of a case study, which will doubtlessly help each student make the most of the new experience and knowledge they have acquired.

Secondary school students also gain experience with the company

During the summer 80 young people will be getting work experience at U. S. Steel Kosice, intended primarily for students and graduates of secondary schools with technical focus. They will be doing auxiliary jobs and operating light mobile equipment used in production support. There has been more interest in summer jobs in the company this year compared with previous years, so to get through to the selection interviews the students had first to meet several criteria. They had to be already 18 years of age, and to be enrolled in secondary technical education finishing with graduation exams specializing in metallurgy, engineering, electrical engineering or railroad transport, or to have graduated not prior to the year 2012. The study results achieved in specialist subjects were of decisive importance, and knowledge of the production processes and environment at U. S. Steel Kosice was an advantage. Possession of valid certificates from specialist courses was also a bonus, for example a binder's license, welder's certificate or crane operator's license. Another equally important criterion was a state of health suitable for working in production operations.
These summer jobs last from July 1st to September 15th. The young workers first had to pass a medical check-up and undergo training in fire prevention and occupational safety, and then they went to join the workforce in every divisional plant of the company, working under the supervision of experienced mentors.

Blood donors acknowledged

This year's World Blood-donors' Day, which is remembered on June 14th every year, was another opportunity to say thank-you and pay respect to these invaluable people. For many of them this altruistic assistance in saving other people's lives is a lifelong mission. Multiple volunteer blood donors were acknowledged on June 23rd by the Local Branch of the Slovakian Red Cross in Kosice. The highest award of the SRC, the Prof. Dr. Jan Knazovicky medal for giving blood 100 times (men) or 80 times (women), was presented to eight donors, while thirteen were awarded the Jan Jansky diamond plaque (80 times for men, 60 for women) and 31 received the Jan Jansky golden plaque (40 times for men, 30 for women). The donors receiving awards now traditionally include a group of steelmakers who are a valuable souce of voluntary blood donations in this region, which was also acknowledged by the representatives of the Red Cross.
