Leading EUROFER representative visits USSK
On July 9 U. S. Steel Kosice received a visit from EUROFER Director General Axel Eggert. This was the first time he had visited the Kosice steelworks, and
he was welcomed on Company premises by U. S. Steel Kosice President Scott D. Buckiso, Vice President External Affairs, Management and Business Development Miroslav Kiralvarga and
Director for Government and EU Liaison Michal Pinter.
Together they discussed problems currently facing steel producers as a result of European Union directives. Axel Eggert was also given a guided tour of our
production operations. He looked round the steel slab continuous casting line at Steel Plant 1, watched energy production and distribution management in the Heating Plant control room at the
Power Engineering Division, and then moved across to HDG Line 3, where he was familiarized with the process of zinc-coating steel sheet. "It's always amazing to watch the technological progress
being made in steel manufacturing. This was evident in the Heating Plant control room, or while walking through HDG Line 3. During the plant tour I realized how many different technological
processes are required in making steel," commented the EUROFER Director General after his excursion round the steelworks.
Secondary school students also gain experience with the company
The workplace organization method known as 5S started being applied in selected pilot workplaces at USSK in 2014, first of all in the rolling mills and the Finishing Division. Based on the initial experience with applying 5S, further pilot workplaces were picked in primary operations, production support and the subsidiary companies. Since then this progressive method has gradually been extended, and currently (as of July 10) there are 369 different workplaces using it around the steelworks. The intention is to have 5S rules established in all workplaces by the end of this year. In the half year just ended, selected workplaces also underwent their first 5S audit, which replaces the previous orderly workplace audit.
Jubilee Summer-Sports Games coming up
The organizers have already begun preparing this year's summer-sports games for U. S. Steel Kosice employees. The 25th jubilee edition of this steelmakers' sporting event will be held in September. This year's program consists of competitions in twelve sporting disciplines taking place on September 3 - 5, while the 13th competition is a golf tournament on the nine-hole course at Mala Ida one week later on Sunday, September 13. For the first time in the history of these corporate games the official opening ceremony will be taking place at the steelworks itself, in front of the main administration building at 9 am on September 3. The closing date for entries to individual competitions is August 24.
