On Monday, September 12, we welcomed in our midst around fifty representatives of the employers group from the European Economic and Social Committee, which is an advisory body of the European union. These representatives came to U. S. Steel Košice from Brussels as part of a two-day working trip to Košice. Their Monday visit to the steelworks preceded a conference on the topic of Sustainable Industry in the Context of the Recycling Economy, which took place the following day, on Tuesday, September 13.
The co-organizer of this event together with USSK was the National Union of Employers (RÚZ). The Euro officials were welcomed to Company premises by USSK Vice President External Relations, Administration and Business Development Miroslav Kiraľvarga, who is at the same time also President of RÚZ. A meeting was prepared for the guests focusing on current problems for the steel industry in Europe, at which the principal speaker was U. S. Steel Košice President Scott Buckiso. The steel business in Europe, he said, suffers from three problems: imported steel being sold unfairly, the threat of market economy status being granted to China, and the proposed system of CO2 emissions quota trading after the year 2020. His presentation sparked a very lively discussion.
