Grants can be awarded to non-profit organizations and municipalities in Eastern Slovakia, both in the Košice and Prešov regions, which actively involve employees of U. S. Steel Košice and its subsidiaries. The Program will support projects focusing firstly on safety in all spheres of life. Occupational safety is the main priority at U. S. Steel Košice and thanks to systematic efforts in 2019 the company achieved zero Days Away From Work injury rate. Other supported projects should focus on free time activities for children and youth, as well as on environmental activities. The amount of 13 000 euros will be distributed to implement beneficial ideas, and the maximum allocation per project is 2 500 euros. The deadline for submission of applications is March 16, 2020, and they must be submitted electronically using the website of the Carpathian Foundation, which is the administrator of the U. S. Steel Košice grant program.

“Our steelmaking company has been operating in Košice since the year 2000,” said James Bruno, President of U. S. Steel Košice, before the opening of the 13th edition of this annual program. “This means not only twenty years of production and services for demanding customers, twenty years of work for thousands of employees, but twenty years of support for this region as well. The Together for the Region program is one of our long-term initiatives through which we express our relationship with the place we work and live in. The program is unique for its active involvement of our employees in small local projects which are useful for many other people,” added President Bruno.

Six projects were supported within the previous 2019 program round. One of them was the organizing of an athletic competition called Chocolate Running Shoe of Slovakia,   with dozens of schools and hundreds of children participating. Athletic champion Ján Volko and Velďák sisters came to encourage the children to do more sport. The Lighthouse of Hope civic association prepared several creative workshops for families in need, enabling them to acquire working skills and spend their free time more usefully. Nižný Klátov village used the grant to modernize its multipurpose games court, which serves both the public and school children from nearby villages as well. Similarly, volunteers in Seňa village built an outdoor sports ground, improving sporting opportunities for children and adults alike. The Romalka civic association at Lunik 9 city ward organized several educational sessions focusing on raising awareness of safe sexual behavior and living, including subsequent child care. Lipovce village not only began renovating Lipovsky Castle, but also published an instruction manual on castle restoration for the mayors of other villages.

“The Carpathian Foundation has been supporting the region of Eastern Slovakia for 25 years now. Most of the success and positive change is backed up by cooperation with active and responsible people who are keen to turn their dreams about a better life into reality on a local level. We are very pleased to be able to help and support their efforts thanks to strong partners such as U. S. Steel Košice. The Together for the Region program is an example of excellent cooperation between business and our Foundation,“ says Laura Dittel, Director of the Carpathian Foundation.
