Košice, June 15, 2021 – Not only during the pandemic but also right after the lifting of restrictions, steelmakers are always ready to provide a helping hand to various organizations. On June 18 and 19, 2021 (Friday and Saturday) they are organizing what is already the 15th year of the “Steelmakers for Košice 2021” company volunteer event. They will be providing selfless assistance to five organizations providing healthcare and social services, activities for children and teenagers and to organizations providing care for the environment and animals.

As every year, the event starts with the “Steelmakers’ Drop of Blood” activity at the Hematology & Transfusion Clinic of the AGEL Hospital Košice-Šaca in the U. S. Steel Košice Public Access Area, where they are ready to accept volunteer blood donors. “Since the number of donors dropped considerably during the pandemic, we especially appreciate this targeted blood donor campaign. These years of mutual cooperation have accustomed us to handling dozens of blood donors continuously, as well as processing red blood cells and plasma for patients after injuries and surgical operations, or people who suffer from various serious diseases,” says Annamária Bratková, Clinic Head Physician.

On Friday and Saturday not only steelmakers but also the public can donate non-perishable food, bedding, kitchen and hygiene supplies for several regional facilities of the Archdiocesan Charity in Košice. They will also welcome women's and men's sneakers, T-shirts, hoodies, jogging clothes, blankets, bed sheets, diapers, baby wrappers and strollers. The collection point will be in the Archdiocesan Charity Center at #19 Masarykova Street (elementary school and kindergarten premises) on Friday from noon until 6:00 PM and on Saturday between 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM.

On Saturday the volunteers are going to help with upgrading of the Center for Children & Families at #42 Hurbanova Street and with maintenance of the large grounds of the Botanical Gardens and Košice Zoo. They plan to build a walkway for the former foster home, finish the landscaping of the attractive outdoor fitness equipment in the Botanical Gardens forest park, and build a wooden summer camp at the Zoo.

“After the relieving of the pandemic measures, our employees did not hesitate for a moment and immediately registered themselves for the volunteer activities. Their willingness and work will give these institutions an opportunity to provide even better care for children or possibilities for the public to relax in the city area,” says Jim Bruno, President of U. S. Steel Košice.

The steelmaking company has been developing these volunteer activities for fifteen years and spreading the values of charity work among the employees, their families, company interns and partners.
