Košice becomes the leading city of academic sport

The 4th edition to date of the top sporting event with a rich worldwide tradition, the Winter Universiade of the Slovak Republic 2016, was officially opened at noon on Monday, February 15, in the Aula Maxima at the Technical University of Košice.

In the competitions that took place in the Košice sports facilities, university students competed in badminton, floor ball, indoor soccer, karate, table-tennis as well as dancing sports. More than three hundred university sportsmen and sportswomen took part at six sports facilities. Arm wrestling was the side event.

Sportsmen and sportswomen participated in "the White Snow Track Race" cross-country skiing competition at Skalka near Kremnica at the beginning of this month. Downhill skiing took place at Vyšná Boca two weekends ago. The Winter Universiade finishes  with the biathlon event at Osrblie on March 5.

The Winter Universiade takes place under the auspices of Mr. Juraj Draxler, Minister  for Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic. Mr. Ervin Lumnitzer, Vice Rector of the Technical University of Košice is the Chairman of the Organizing Committees on behalf of the Host Organization.

The Winter Universiade is part of the "Košice - European City of Sport 2016" project.
