Charity concert is climax of USSK's year-round sponsoring activity

The Christmas charity concert named "Bountiful Snowflakes", which took place in Kosice State Theater last Saturday, December 13th, was the climax of U. S. Steel Kosice's year-round sponsorship activity.

During this year the Company has dedicated 38.7 million Slovak crowns to supporting 250 organizations all over Slovakia, but mostly in the East Slovakian region. In this way we have assisted many children's homes, hospitals, health-care institutes and individual people who are particularly dependent on charity. Before the grandly-decorated stage was taken over by a whirl of music and great songs performed by well-known and popular artists, the audience in the theater was addressed by U. S. Steel Kosice President Christopher Navetta.

"2003 has been a very successful year for U. S. Steel Kosice," he said, "and we are glad to have been able once again to support projects in the fields of charity, health-care, science, education, culture and sport. We are glad that our company's success brings joy and pleasure to young patients in hospital and children in children's homes, as well as to the people of this region generally. Taking part in U. S. Steel Kosice's humanitarian projects in Eastern Slovakia, in the course of the year my wife Phyllis and I have visited several hospitals and children's homes. These visits always made a deep impression on us. The support from U.S. Steel Kosice, from the company and from its employees, is an expression of goodwill and support for the region. I want to thank our employees personally for supporting our activity throughout the year, because it is a very important integral part of our activities as a whole," the President emphasized, and after greeting the audience outside on the Main Street via the large-screen display on the stage by the Immaculata column, he wished everyone happiness during the Christmas festivities, good health and every success in the New Year.

In the interludes between the artists' performances, U. S. Steel Kosice made a series of generous donations. A symbolic check worth 250000 SKK for buying equipment and furnishings for three maisonettes for physically disabled youngsters at the Social Services Home on Opatovska Street in Kosice was presented by USSK Vice-president for Finance Karl Csensich to the Home's director Ladislav Osz. Another check for the same amount was accepted by Zora Burcikova, director of the Children's Home on Uralska Street in Kosice, from USSK Vice-president for Sales and Marketing Joseph Scherrbaum. This money will fund the creation of a multifunctional playground in the grounds of the Home.

There was spontaneous applause when the proceeds from the USSK employees' collection for the East Slovakian Oncology Institute amounting to 1 111 956 SKK were presented to Igor Andrasina, Head of the Radiotherapy and Oncology Clinic in Kosice, by USSK Vice-president for Human Resources Miroslav Kiralvarga. Another check for a matching sum, exactly as promised by U. S. Steel Kosice management when the collection was announced, was accepted from Company President Christopher Navetta by Institute Director Alexander Berc.

Threesome of golds from the converters

Last week more than 170 voluntary (unpaid) blood donors gathered in the ceremonial room of Kosice Old City town hall to be presented by the Slovakian Red Cross Society with diamond, gold and silver plaques in memory of Prof. Dr. Jan Jansky for multiple blood donations. Among the "gold" donors were a threesome of steelmakers from U. S. Steel Kosice - Valentin Sabadsag, Jozef Franc and Miroslav Janok - who work at the converters in Steel Plant 1 and are in fact colleagues on the same shift.
