Flower of hope for life
Life-style, smoking, alcohol, diet, chemicals, infections, excessive sunbathing - these are just some of the factors which, according to verified research, trigger
one of the most serious of diseases - cancer. In 1990, following the model set up in West European countries, the League Against Cancer was also established in Slovakia. The League carries out
its program without state subsidy, financed exclusively by donations provided by the public. Its aim is to eliminate the taboo, the myths and distorted information about cancer, and to promote
education towards prevention. As part of its activities, the League also operates the Cancer Helpline and an advisory service.
The League Against Cancer engages significantly in Narcissus Day, named after the flowers which have become a symbol of hope for life and the fight against cancer in
many European countries. This year, Narcissus Day comes on Friday, April 2nd, and every year, thanks to people's altruism, the League's members manage to collect even more money in support of its
good cause. The Kosice branch has 200 registered active volunteers, mostly young people, university students, medics in particular, who spend Narcissus Day handing out this flower of hope in
return for a voluntary contribution.
April 2nd this year will be no different. League members will be in the streets of Kosice and around the USSK Public Access Area spreading knowledge and approaching
people. They will all have a permit with them authorizing the League Against Cancer to organize this public collection.
