Gift from USA to Kosice hospitals
On Monday, August 16th, U. S. Steel Kosice President Christopher Navetta, the representative of American company Plastipak Packaging Ralph Hoarau and the CEO's of the four Kosice hospitals put their signatures to a contract confirming the delivery of 3.2 tonnes of health-care supplies from the USA. This medical material was assembled by the University of Michigan and Plastipak Packaging of Plymouth, and the transport, customs formalities and distribution were arranged by U. S. Steel Kosice. The whole project was coordinated and supported by the Embassy of the USA in Slovakia.
Day of experiences with Phyllis Navetta
Seven girls from the Dobsina Children's Home visited Kosice on Wednesday of last week. They were invited by the U. S. Steel Kosice President's wife Phyllis
Navetta, and there was a pleasant surprise awaiting them. After arriving in the city and meeting Mrs.Navetta at the fountain on Main Street, they then discovered what sort of program had been
prepared for them.
First a visit to a cosmetics studio including a talk on how to look after complexion and hair, then lunch in a pizzeria, and finally a lesson with temperamental
salsa teacher Miguel from Ecuador at the Jumbo Center. This holiday visit to Kosice will be well remembered by the teenagers from the Dobsina Children's Home thanks to their experiences, but also
because of their presents from Mrs.Navetta - books on cosmetics.
Kavecany Mini-marathon
The Kosice city ward of Kavecany recently held what is by now the 16th edition of the annual Kavecany Mini-marathon. This race counts towards the distance-runners' regional grand prix, and it was entered by 86 runners from Hungary, Ukraine and Slovakia. The peloton contained several distance runners from our club BK Steel Kosice. The best performance came from Ukrainian Orest Babjak, who won for the eighth time in the history of this half-marathon, this year with a time of 1h14m12s. Third place was taken by our Imrich Pastor from the Power Division.
Designers' workshop starts on Monday
The opportunity to get to grips with some metalwork in the third edition of the annual international workshop named U. S. Steel - Metal Inspirations 2004
(taking place from August 23rd - 31st) has been taken up by design students from four universities. The workshops of the Metallurgical Apprentice School in Saca will be full of young designers
next week, assisted by the school's specialist trainers and by their own teachers, from the technical universities STU Bratislava, TU Kosice, ASP Krakov and VUT Brno.
The themes of this year's meeting, which is intended to mark the Slovak Republic's accession to the European Union, are utility objects, souvenir objects and indoor
sculptures. The finished works will be presented publicly by their creators, and the official opening of the exhibition at the U. S. Steel Kosice Gallery will be on August 31st. Some
pieces will also form part of the Kosice steelworks' exhibition at the International Engineering Fair in Brno, and from the end of September till the end of October they will be on display in the
Slovak Technical Museum in Kosice.
Who's for the championships?
The qualification rounds in the shooting triathlon are coming to an end, ready for the Slovak Championships. The penultimate round took place recently in Michalovce, and the verdict as to who will make it through to the group of 36 finalists will be decided in the last competition at Raca. In Zemplin the line-up consisted of 23 marksmen from Presov, Kosice, nearby Poruba pod Vihorlatom and Michalovce itself. Representing the steelworks, Hluben finished fourth, Imrich came sixth and Brugos seventh. So far, five of our marksmen have a chance of starting in the Slovak Championships, namely Hruska, Brugos, Seman, Imrich and Hluben.
