Representatives from Pittsburgh visit USSK

Tomorrow and Friday the Kosice steelworks is being visited by the top representatives of the U. S. Steel Corporation from Pittsburgh - President and Chairman of the Board John P. Surma, Deputy Chairman and Chief Legal and Administrative Officer, General Counsel and Secretary Dan D. Sandman, Senior Vice-president Human Resources and Business Services Thomas W. Sterling, Executive Vice-president and Chief Operating Officer John H. Goodish, Executive Vice-president and Chief Financial Officer Gretchen R. Haggerty, and Senior Vice-president Strategic Planning and Business Development John J. Connelly.
They will be welcomed at USSK by Company President David H. Lohr and other top managers of the firm. The guests from Pittsburgh will be taking part in the ground-breaking ceremony, the official start of construction of the building for the new hot-dip galvanizing line, which is intended to produce annually 350 000 tonnes of steel sheets for the automotive industry. The construction is expected to cost around 160 million USD, and the line should be coming into operation in 2007. Production of sheets from this galvanizing line will substantially increase U. S. Steel Kosice's competitiveness in Central Europe. The representatives from Pittsburgh will also be having meetings with USSK top management and visiting several other production operations around the steelworks

David Lohr meets trades union leaders

For the first time since taking over the post of President of U. S. Steel Kosice, David H. Lohr last week officially met the members of the Trades Union Council of the Metalurg trades union at U. S. Steel Kosice. Also present at the meeting on June 16th were USSK Vice-president Human Resources Miroslav Kiralvarga and Chairman of the Metalurg trades union Róbert Kulik. The topics of their discussion were issues of occupational safety and implementation of the APT program aimed at optimizing the use of employment capacity.

Steelmakers' ranks to be reinforced

A total of 210 young people will soon be reinforcing the ranks of steelmakers for two months in order to fulfill some special production targets. Through this form of summer work they will not only gain some well-earned crowns, but above all they will acquire valuable experience from practise at our steelmaking company.

U. S. Steel Talent Night 2005

Monday of last week saw the start of the first round of auditions for U. S. Steel Talent Night 2005. This competition is intended to seek out and support talented young people from eastern Slovakia, and it is attracting dancers, singers and musicians again for the fifth time now. Its specific charm lies in the fact that in contrast to other competitions, in this one the contestants have to present their own creativity. Monday's auditions were for the dancers, with 39 entries for this year's competition. On Tuesday the singers performed their own songs in front of the jury of experts. From Wednesday to Friday the stage belonged to the category with the most entries, the musical bands. The three bands going forward to the finals were selected by the jury out of a total of forty entries in Friday's semi-final round.

Lienka grows into beauty in Polov

In the course of several months in the center of neighboring Polov, next to the village council building, something beautiful has grown up called Lienka (Ladybird). This is the name which has been given by the village, in response to the wishes of its littlest residents, to the new children's playground, whose construction has been sponsored to the greatest extent by U. S. Steel Kosice. On Sunday afternoon, June 19th, exactly on Fathers' Day but also as part of the village's June Fair, which was being held here for the fifteenth time, the children finally got to enjoy their new place of fun and games. What joy there was when U. S. Steel Kosice Vice-president Personnel and Organization Martin Pitorak together with village council leader Maria Birosova snipped the tape and officially opened the playground for use.
