U. S. Steel Kosice starts another important investment project
In 2007, just two years from now, Kosice steelmakers will be supplying automobile manufacturers with galvanized sheets, and in terms of their production range they
will be able to compete in this way with other steelmakers anywhere in the world. This will be happening thanks to the latest capital investment project, hot-dip galvanizing line no.3, which the
U. S. Steel Corporation has decided to build as part of its Slovakian operation.
The beginning of construction is now considered as June 23rd 2005, the day of the official groundbreaking and setting of the foundation stone for the hall which the
plant is to be housed in. This important event at U. S. Steel Kosice last Thursday was attended by members of the top management of the United States Steel Corporation led by
Corporation President John Surma, and by Slovak Prime Minister Mikulas Dzurinda, charge d'affaires, a.i. of the U. S. Embassy in Bratislava Scott N. Thayer, Kosice Self-governing Region President
Rudolf Bauer, Kosice City Mayor Zdenko Trebula, and representatives of the Kosice steelworks management headed by President David Lohr.
The official guests also included employees' representatives from the largest trades union organization in the Company, especially METALURG U. S. Steel
Kosice Trades Union Council Chairman Mikulas Dula. Among the participants in the ceremony were also representatives of automotive companies, their suppliers, service centers and logistics
companies, and the leading producer of white appliances in Slovakia.
EURES network international job fair
What has become one of the key activities of the central and local offices of employment, social and family affairs in the field of employment services is the EURES
network international job fair, now touring Slovakia. After Nitra and Poprad the latest fair was held here in Kosice on June 22nd and 23rd last week. This fair was attended by 24 foreign firms
offering a grand total of 3200 job opportunities. The largest number, 1500, is with Skoda Auto in the Czech Republic, which is preparing to build a new plant in that country. With 1200 places for
truck and bus drivers there was the company from Great Britain.
Other foreign companies were offering work in the field of carer services, in agriculture, the food-processing industry, security services and other professions
including crane operators or fitters and turners. Interested fair visitors had the chance to give the company representatives their resumes on the spot and to sit for personal interviews in
specially-reserved rooms. This fair, which according to our estimate was attended by more than five thousand job-seekers, also included a U. S. Steel Kosice information stand.
Kosice-Sena half-marathon
Last Saturday the Kosice Marathon Club in cooperation with Sena village council and general sponsor U. S. Steel Kosice organized the 3rd edition of the
annual half-marathon on the old course from Kosice to Sena. The starting line-up consisted of 152 endurance runners, and at the finish the one who best paced his performance was reigning Slovak
half-marathon champion Jan Krizak from Skalica. Finishing in second place was Ukrainian runner Anatolij Malij, and third place was taken by USSK Power Division employee Imrich Pastor.
In the women's race, just like last year, we had both of our runners Erika Billa and Betka Tiszova on the podium, but the victory this year was in fact won by
Ukrainian runner Natalija Malija.
