Kosice steelmakers have three irons in the fire
Protection of the environment in Slovakia, Poland and the Czech Republic is the focus of the sixth in the series of annual international ecological competitions
called EKO 2005, held under the auspices of the environment ministers of all three countries. We will know the names of the winners very shortly.
The national round of the competition in Sovakia, which could be entered by private individuals and organizations with technical or rationalizing solutions,
inventions and patents implemented, created or registered during the period from January 1st 2004 to June 30th 2005, involved five firms and institutions and thirteen individuals. As in previous
years, U. S. Steel Kosice has its own irons in the fire as well. The winners of the national competitions go forward to the international finals, organized this year by the Polish side
in Częstochova. The victor laureate will be awarded the title of International Ecology Champion 2005.
Ministerial orders of distinction
To mark the occasion of the celebrations of the Day of Miners, Geologists, Metallurgists and Oilmen, which took place in Banska Stiavnica on September 9th, awards were presented to the best employees in these branches of industry. For the first time the orders of distinction awarded by the SR Minister for Trade and Industry went to steelmakers as well as to miners. Medals for loyalty and selflessness at work were also presented on the recommendation of the employers' organization to four employees of U. S. Steel Kosice: Jan Antos from the Mechanika Division, Jan Jakubov from the Steel Plants Division, Milan Jelc from the Power Plant Division and Pavol Restei from the Hot Strip Mill Division.
Jozef Gonci keeps his promise to the children
It all really began last year. At one of the events organized for them by U. S. Steel Kosice, children from the Nižna Kamenica and Kosicka Nova Ves
children's homes met this country's best marksman, holder of many champion's titles and Olympic medals, Jozef Gonci. He promised them then that in the near future he would take them with him to a
rifle-range, where they would be able to try shooting with some truly genuine sporting guns. That time came on Tuesday and Wednesday of last week, when everyone got together at the range on the
Kavecany Road in Kosice.
"I'm happy that I've been able to keep my promise, because I think it's a noble thing to help children, especially because I'm sure they'll make good our care one
day," Jozef Gonci told Ocel Vychodu, and went on to explain: "I started rifle-shooting when I was about the same age as these children. Today they're getting the chance to try out some
top-quality sporting guns, and from what I can see, they're enjoying it." Jozef Gonci was happy to organize this event for another reason: he has himself been supported by U. S. Steel
Kosice in raising the standard of his sporting skills, and in this way he had a modest opportunity to make the company's support more worthwhile.
In fact, together with Susan Lohr, Jozef Gonci had yet another surprise prepared for the children. After having lunch together, they all went for a ride in the
horse-drawn tram along the Main Street in Kosice.
