Fifth victory for a Kenyan marathoner

The course record for the Kosice Peace Marathon, 2h12m35s set by the Pole Adam Dobrzynsky in 2004, has held, but it was a close call - just 19 seconds, and it would have been beaten on Sunday, October 1st, by the young winner, 22-year-old Edwin Kipchon from Kenya. The start of the Marathon saw 674 endurance runners set out. Kosice people were curious to see how their representative, Marcel Matanin from Obal Servis Kosice Sports Club, would get on, and he finished in 13th place.
By doing so, he also gained the title of Champion Marathon Runner of Slovakia for this year. Reaching the finish just in back of him was U. S. Steel Kosice employee Imrich Pastor from the Power Division, who got silver in the Slovakian Championship. In the women's race first place was taken by Natalia Kulesova from Belarus. Of our steel-making colleagues, Billa finished in 7th spot and Tiszova came in ninth. The half-marathon had 622 runners start out, and like last year the winner's place was taken by Obal Servis Kosice Sports Club member Miroslav Vankona. The women's race was won by Hill Running World Champion Katarina Beresova, also from Obal Servis Kosice. Another feature of the 83rd edition of KPM was the half-marathon for inline skaters, won by Krizan and Karabova in the men's and women's races respectively.
The whole Marathon festival on Sunday included a mini-marathon, company run, brides' run and under-14s boys' and girls' relay race known as the Zabala Memorial Race. These events had individuals participating from the youngest of runners right up to the seniors, not only from Kosice but also whole families with children of employees from U. S. Steel Kosice, as well as the families of our American managers.
