New chimney protects employees' health
Right near the heating plant of the Power Division, opposite the former blast furnaces admin building, a new chimney is now attracting people's attention. The
yellow-painted, 41-meter-high metal pipe is not particularly reminiscent of a chimney, and the uninitiated might conclude from its color that it is part of the gas mains system. The truth is that
this is a new blast-furnace gas exhaust chimney, and it's been given the number 5.
Exactly a week ago, on April 23rd, this facility was put into operation by the Technical Gases unit at the Power Division. It grew to its present height during the
last six months, and it joins the existing two exhaust chimneys of the Power Division. They are ready for a situations when any of the big gas-consuming plants goes out of action, leading to a
rapid rise in pressure in the main blast-furnaces gas pipes, and their role is to reduce unwanted escapes of gas into the atmosphere and prevent employees' health from being threatened. In this
way, the new chimney increases the safety of employees.
Brad Cramer replaces Michael Duff
At the end of March, Assistant General Counsel Michael P. Duff returned to Pittsburgh to begin his new assignment in the Labor Section of the Law Department. His
position will be filled by Brad Cramer, who arrived in Kosice on April 2nd. Brad received his Bachelor of Arts degree and his Juris Doctorate from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
He worked as a law clerk for a Superior Court judge and then as a litigation associate in a law firm before joining United States Steel Corporation in 2004.
"My duties in the USS Law Department in Pittsburgh progressed from litigation to real estate to commercial work. Here at U. S. Steel Kosice, I will be
responsible for activities of the Litigation and Special Projects Sections." Brad is married and has two children. His wife, Kim, worked in the field of retail management and sales. His son,
Josh, is eleven and his daughter, Gillen, is eight. "We look forward to getting to know Kosice, exploring the surrounding area, and travelling to other countries."
Let's make our city more beautiful... and better!
As part of the Our Kosice volunteer days project, today we invite you to support the civic association called the People and Dogs Union of Mutual Assistance, and its
dog shelter at Haniska, not far outside the USSK works area. This is the second largest in Slovakia, and they take care of around a hundred dogs. They will welcome your help above all in
rendering and plastering the building inside and out, and preparing the interior for laying floors. Around the building there is also a lot of unwanted material which they would like to get rid
of. There's enough work here not only for strong mens' arms, which can also help put in part of the fencing around the grounds, but also for women.
At the Fun-Sports Area on Alejova Street they want to continue with last year's work on the landscaping and planting trees and bushes, so that the children who often
come to the center for road-safety lessons or for various sports can feel even better here. You can also help people in material and social need. U. S. Steel Kosice is working together
with the Archdiocesan Charity in Kosice in organizing a clothes collection for them. Lighter items of clothing will be welcome, like underwear for men, women and children, but also bed-linen,
towels, or shoes, especially practical or sporting footwear for adults and children, and schoolkids will surely be pleased with a school bag. You can bring clothing on Friday and Saturday, May
16th and 17th, to two collection points. The first is the Archdiocesan Charity center at number 2, Juzna trieda, where they will be taking things in from 9 am to 6 pm on Friday, and from 9 am to
2 pm on Saturday. The second collection point will be open at the same times in the premises of the Autumn of Life civic association at number 24, Trieda SNP.
