Discussions on impacts of recession in Eastern Slovakia
"U. S. Steel Kosice is to be highly praised for its rapid reaction to the new conditions, for its sensitive approach to the employment issue, and for seeking all possible ways of keeping the effects of the crisis on the company to a minimum," remarked Kosice Self-governing Region Chairman Zdenko Trebula at last week's HN Club expert discussions in Kosice on the topic of the impacts of the recession in Eastern Slovakia. The fact is that steelmaking was among the first industries to be hit by the crisis, and its effects on the steel sector and the automobile, electrotechnical and construction industries were described by USSK Vice President Commercial Peter J. Alvarado.
Human resources in times of crisis
Last week the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) in Kosice organized a workshop on the topic of Human Resources in Times of Crisis. At the meeting the participants discussed the current market requirements, and what challenges they represent for human resources managers. The points covered included the need for maximum utilization of human resources productivity, adaptibility of HR to market requirements, the importance of preserving sufficient motivation by maintaining employees' benefits and bonuses, while also undertaking their reassessment during the recession, companies' preparedness to do things differently from previously, and what measures firms are taking to minimize the impacts of the crisis. The participants emphasized throughout the vital importance of timely and open communication with employees.
Men's Challenger tournament takes place next week
The tennis courts at Anicka in Kosice are prepared for welcoming the world-class tennis players who will be taking part from June 6th to 13th in the 7th edition of the annual ATP Challenger Tour men's tennis tournament, the Edymax Holding Kosice Open with 30 000 a in prize money. Entries to the tournament include nine former members of the top hundred in the world rankings, among them the former number 12 and Slovak national team player Dominik Hrbaty. This year according to the ATP ranking he is coming into this competition from 158th place. The players taking part include just one from the top one hundred in the current ATP ranking (as at May 18th 2009), namely the Spaniard Marcel Granollers-Pujol, who is ranked in 95th place. This superb tennis player is a member of the elite Spnish team which won the Davis Cup last year. Another of the well-known players coming to Anicka is the Argentinian Mariano Puerta.
