Volkswagen awards its best global suppliers

United States Steel Corporation was the only steel company among 18 global suppliers receiving an award under Volkswagen's "Group Award 2009". The ceremony was held at the Phaeno Science Center in Wolfsburg, Germany. Our company was represented by John P. Surma - Chairman and CEO, and George F. Babcoke - Senior Vice President European Operations and President of U. S. Steel Kosice. At the ceremony, John Surma accepted the award on behalf of U. S. Steel from Volkswagen board member Francisco Javier Garcia Sanz.
Since the start up of the new Automotive Hot Dip Galvanizing Line at Kosice in 2007, U. S. Steel has supplied product to Volkswagen plants in Germany and Bratislava. Our steel can be found on the VW Touareg, VW Golf, VW Passat, VW Caddy and almost every model manufactured under the Skoda brand of vehicles. U. S. Steel is expanding the cooperation with the VW Group, including future business with AUDI in Germany and the VW plants in Mexico and the USA.

Cokery gas desulfurizing project gets under way

The project for building a desulfurizing plant for cokery gas is proceeding into the implementation phase. U. S. Steel Kosice plans to bring the new technology into operation by the end of 2010. This is an ecological project which will enable the Company to meet the national legislation requirements for the removal of sulfur from cokery gas, but at the same time it will lead to improvement in the atmosphere and the working environment at the Cokery itself, then at the steelworks generally and in the nearby surrounding area. Another positive aspect is that the purity of cokery gas in the works piping system.

Runners on the half-marathon course

Last Saturday, June 20th, saw the running of the 7th edition of the annual half-marathon on the old Kosice - Sena course. The general sponsor of this event was U. S. Steel Kosice. At the start-line there were 176 runners, male and female, as well as 71 in-line skaters. Since several of the well-known and favorite endurance runners were missing from the bunch, the fight for first place was all the more interesting. Both disciplines featured a wide range of recreational runners from the ranks of U. S. Steel Kosice employees. American managers Michael L. Simko and Bradley A. Cramer also set out on the course. The men's competition was won by Stefan Sumerling from Spisska Nova Ves, and first place among the women was taken by a member of our running club BKJ Steel Kosice, Zuzana Korotvickova.
