U. S. Steel Kosice helps villages stricken by floods

The residents of seventeen villages in the environs of Kosice, and of the city itself, which were worst stricken by last week's destructive floods, have been given a helping hand by U. S. Steel Kosice. Between June 3rd and 8th more than 170 Tatra truckloads amounting to over 2 600 tons of pumice were conveyed from the steelworks by employees of USSK Transport Division and subsidiary Vulkmont, to be used for building up and reinforcing anti-flooding river levees. The Company is in regular communication with the neighboring villages, and has supplied some of them with floating pumps at their request.

Casualty Surgery Clinic has new operating table thanks to USSK

On Monday, June 7th, a new, modern operating table was handed over on behalf of the Kosice steelmakers for use by the casualty surgery clinic at the Louis Pasteur University Hospital and the Medical Faculty of Safarik University in Kosice by U. S. Steel Kosice President George F. Babcoke. The money for purchasing this table and its accessory equipment was put together by the employees of USSK and its subsidiary companies who took part in the fund-raising for the casualty surgery clinic at the end of last year. With matching contributions from the Company itself and the U. S. Steel Kosice Foundation, the total amount collected came to 92 975 eur.

New type added to KORAD radiator range

The range of KORAD P 90 radiators produced by U. S. Steel Kosice has recently been enhanced with a new type of unit. It is 550 millimeters in height, and takes middle place in the range of five construction height types produced to date (300, 400, 500 , 600 and 900 millimeters). This radiator is specifically intended for reconstruction projects, to replace the old cast-iron composite radiators installed in houses and apartment blocks mainly in the period from the 1950s to 1970s. The new type has gained the necessary certificates, so there is now nothing preventing these units getting from the production lines to the end users in the very near future.

Two awards for Ocel Vychodu

Ocel Vychodu continues to be successful in the face of nationwide and regional competition in Slovakia. In the last few days, representatives of the paper's editorial staff have received two separate awards. The Company newspaper was the winner in the 7th edition of the annual competition to find the Corporate Medium of the Year 2009, thus successfully defending its winning status from the previous year.
U. S. Steel Kosice and Ocel Vychodu are now entitled to use the label of Corporate Medium of the Year 2009 as the best corporate medium in the category of corporate newspapers. The editorial team also scored highly in the 15th edition of the writers' competition for journalists in the East Slovakian region for the year 2009, winning category B - local, district, corporate press and internet newspapers. This competition, organized by the Slovak Syndicate of Journalists and the Literary Fund, featured entries from 43 writers and one team, with a total of 119 articles and photographs.

Kosice Open 2010 has the strongest line-up in recent years

The city of Kosice is alive with the 8th edition of the annual tennis tournament called Kosice Open 2010. This event, with U. S. Steel Kosice among its principal sponsors, began this year on June 7th and continues until June 12th. The organizers have succeeded in attracting the strongest starting line-up in recent years to the clay courts at the Anicka Tennis Center.
Among the competitors are two players from the top 100 in the world rankings - Jan Hajek of the Czech Republic and Fabio Fognini of Italy. A great many accompanying events form part of this tournament, one of which this year is the auctioning of a racket belonging to world-famous Czech tennis star Ivan Lendl. The proceeds are being dedicated to purchasing breathing support equipment for the Children's Hospital in Kosice.
