USSK at the celebrations in Banska Stiavnica
To pay tribute to one's craft, and honor those who have been faithful to it. This was the main aim of this year's celebrations of Miners', Geologists', Steelmakers'
and Oilmen's Day, which took place on Friday of last week, September 9, in Banska Stiavnica, attended by hundreds of guests not only from Slovakia but also from Poland, the Czech Republic,
Hungary and Slovenia.
The official assembly naturally as well as traditionally also included Kosice steelmakers and their spouses. U. S. Steel Kosice President David J. Rintoul
was there, with Vice Presidents Vladimir Jacko, Martin Pitorak, John P. Coyne and Elena Petraskova, and many more steelmakers. The Ministry for Trade and Industry of the Slovak Republic presented
ministerial honors to seven of them. Dusan Kolesar, Head of Maintenance Operations at the Pipe Plant in the Radiators and Pipes Division, Marian Stefanovic, Chief Roller at the Cold Rolling Mill
Division, Eugen Szepesi and Miroslav Magyar, foremen at Vulkmont, and Jan Vranec in memoriam received decorations "For Loyalty To Work". Milan Celuch and Jan Gizela, shift turner and shift
electrician respectively at the Steel Plants Division, received "Exemplary Rescue-worker" decorations.
Week of Ethics and Keeping U. S. Steel Principles
From September 19 to 23, 2011, all operations of the United States Steel Corporation worldwide will be holding a Week of Ethics and Keeping U. S. Steel Principles. During this week, all employees of U. S. Steel Kosice and its subsidiary companies will be informed about the U. S. Steel Ethics Hotline, which is a confidential way of reporting illegal or unethical conduct which might affect the United States Steel Corporation, including U. S. Steel Kosice and its subsidiaries. This hotline is operated by an independent company.
Kosice steelmakers with irons in the fire again
The ninth edition of the annual international ecology competition named EKO 2011, aimed at protecting and enhancing the environment in Slovakia, the Czech Republic
and Poland, is now entering its implementation phase. By the deadline on September 9, the organizer of the national round in the Slovak Republic, the Faculty of Metallurgy at the Technical
University of Kosice, had received entries for a total of thirteen environmental projects.
Kosice steelmakers will of course be among those seeking the best possible placing in the national round and promotion to the international competition. Research and
Development staff Alica Maslejova, Rudolf Zelinsky, Jan Tomas and Peter Vlasic want to score highly with their project entitled "Laboratory Evaluation of Biomass Usage in Sinter Production".
Jaroslav Parnahaj from our subsidiary Refrako has in turn entered the competition with a project developing "Ecological Plastic Material for Sealing Blast Furnace Tap-holes". Everything will be
decided in the coming weeks, and the results of the national round in the EKO 2011 competition will be officially announced on November 1 this year.
Kosice Marathon draws near
Interest in our most attractive sporting event - the international Kosice Peace Marathon (KPM) - grows year on year. The participation record has already been beaten by the number of entries for this year's races. Whereas last year the marathon, half-marathon and the other seven accompanying events had a record 5 426 registered participants, as at September 9 this year 6 058 starting entries had already been sent in. Those who are interested may still apply and register till just before the start of the KPM, which will be on Sunday, October 2. The mini-marathon or U. S. Steel Family Run is itself expected to involve about 2 200 runners.
