Steel Park - Creative Factory tested by steelmakers
From August 26 to 30, employees of U. S. Steel Kosice and their family members have the opportunity to look round the Steel Park - Creative Factory as part
of its trial operation. Setting up the Steel Park is a cooperative venture involving the Kosice steelworks, the Technical University of Kosice, P. J. Safarik University in Kosice, the Slovak
Academy of Sciences and the City of Kosice. Three floors in a specially-reconstructed building in the grounds of the
Barracks/Kulturpark on Kukucinova Street in Kosice will, once it is completed, offer a "creative factory" for children, young people and adults as well,
demonstrating the story of steel and more than fifty asociated interactive exhibits. Most of them can be tried out this week by USSK employees and their families.
Experienced leaders in the position of coaches
Since February of this year U. S. Steel Kosice has been running a Mentoring Program based on the coaching approach, which is aimed at the development of specialist and leadership skills in a select group of steelmakers. The program involves 31 newly-appointed managers from primary operations, specialist units and the subsidiary companies. As General Manager Human Resources Development and Staffing Milan Polca explained at an informal meeting of all the project participants with members of the company's top management led by President George F. Babcoke, experienced managers and leaders have been selected for the positions of mentors. The program itself, which is divided into several stages, goes on until December of this year.
Turbogenerators with improved fire protection
As part of the program of identification of dangers and risks at U. S. Steel Kosice, certain items of plant and technology have been singled out which must
fulfill higher standards of fire safety. Fire protection for critical parts of technology has been implemented by the company in recent years, particularly in the operations of the Cokery, Blast
Furnaces, Hot and Cold Rolling Mills and the Coated Products and Tin Mill divisions.
This year it is the turn of the Power Engineering division to be involved in the improved fire protection project, specifically the five turbogenerators in the
Heating Plant Machine Hall, which are of strategic importance for the company. The aim of this project, the implementation of which is spread over this and next year, is to eliminate the
potential of damage to the equipment as a result of fire, as well as the consequent possible losses in production.
Saturday spent in the spirit of exercise and fun
On Saturday, August 17, one of U. S. Steel Kosice's popular annual events took place at the Fun-Sports Area on Alejova Street in Kosice, the "Families Do Sport" day organized by the staff of the Department of Public Affairs. More than 300 steelmakers and their family members tried out their strengths in four sports disciplines: soccer, streetball, darts and table-tennis. Adults and children alike enjoyed the varied accompanying program as well.
