Leaders of the Carnegie, Our Way initiative meet in Medzev

The leaders of the Carnegie, Our Way initiative met in Medzev on July 25 to evaluate the results achieved so far in this area. U. S. Steel Kosice President George F. Babcoke, as well as Vice President Operations Mark Tabler USSE Director Improvement of Processes and Technologies Joseph H. Morey, wanted personally to tell everyone who is actively involved in the process of transforming the Company that they particularly appreciate their work and contributions, and at the same time to motivate them to keep up their efforts.
Mark Tabler thanked the managers for their work and results in the first six months of this year, and remarked in doing so that the Company wants to be the best workplace in the world. Georgre F. Babcoke was also satisfied with the steelmakers' results to date. He especially mentioned the collective effort and cooperation between individual organizational units. He added that the results of the Kosice operation form the standard by which the results of the Corporation as a whole are now measured. "We have great expectations in the field of occupational safety and health protection. We know that in this sphere we can become a world leader. We well realize that we are asking a lot, after all we are working on many things, but we must remain focused on safety. We want Kosice to be the safest place to work in the whole Corporation."

Great success of the subsidiary companies

Great success in the form of one and a half million employee-hours worked without injury has been achieved by the teams in U. S. Steel Kosice's subsidiary companies. This excellent result in the field of occupational safety was acknowledged by the President of the Kosice steelworks George F. Babcoke at a working breakfast attended by around two hundred employees, as well as several top managers of the Company. At the close of the meeting, following more than an hour's discussion, USSK GM OSH and REACH Mark T. Salo presented diplomas to representatives of the five subsidiary companies.

Metal in the hands of young designers

In the second half of this month young designers will be getting together in Kosice again for the now twelfth edition of the annual international workshop named Metal Inspirations 2014. The organizers of this event, the Technical University of Kosice and U. S. Steel Kosice, will be welcoming between August 18 and 28 students and teachers of colleges and universities with a focus on design from the Czech Republic, Hungary, Germany, Poland, Slovakia and Great Britain. The participants' artifacts will all be linked with the tenth anniversary of Slovakia's accession to the European Union. The theme that has also been adopted for this workshop is "I, European", which should inspire young people in various parts of Europe to create specific artistic and design works from metal. As in previous years, the Saca Vocational School will provide the physical creative workshops, and the young designers will be lent a helping hand by the school's experienced staff of craftsmen. The works created by the students and their teachers during their ten days in Kosice will be displayed to the public in a special exhibition at the Slovak Technical Museum in Kosice.

Eighth edition of Summer Ice-hockey School ends

From July 28 until August 1 the Steel Arena in Kosice was home to nearly 50 boys aged seven to eleven years, who set about perfecting their hockey-playing craft under the supervision of professional trainers. Three young "goalmen" also underwent the intensive training. The biggest attraction though was the presence of defender Martin Marincin, who learned his craft in Kosice but now plays in the NHL wearing an Edmionton Oilers jersey. He enjoyed training with the boys, and apart from many hockey-playing tips he signed a lot of autographs. Also willing to spend time with them were Peter Bartos, Gabriel Spilar, Martin Strbak and Jiři Bicek from our HC Kosice A-team.
